Before Scarlett Johansson launched a thousand essays by taking on the role of Motoko Kusanagi, the cybernetic crimefighter was nothing more than a drawing. The original Ghost in the Shell anime debuted in 1995 and blew audiences away with its futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic, influencing everything from The Matrix to the Star Wars prequels. In the film, the robotic government agent cuts through the dystopian world of 2029 in search of the Puppet Master, a sentient computer virus taking over human hosts and causing havoc. The film’s flashy Hollywood remake is only a couple months away on March 31, but before that, the original will infiltrate theaters in a special engagement.

With 2016 almost over, thankfully, it’s time to turn our collective attention to everything we’re excited for in the new year. Our staff even drew up a list of all the movies we’re most anticipating, and among those is the Ghost in the Shell adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson. To say that the movie remains controversial would be an understatement, but we can’t deny that it looks stunning. There’s even a new image from the movie to prove it.

Is This the Superhero Lineup for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?
We already know Avengers: Infinity War is going to be huge, with the current MCU arcs building toward a crossover event that promises to be the studio’s biggest yet — even bigger than Captain America: Civil War. According to previous comments made by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Infinity War will feature dozens of characters from the Marvel universe, including Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. As for the rest of the lineup, we can only make educated guesses, but a new casting call may have spilled the beans.

Paramount has rolled out a new international trailer for Scarlett Johansson’s live-action Ghost in the Shell, which is faster-paced and shorter than the first one we got early last month. There isn’t a whole lot of new footage in this aside from a few second-long shots, but we see the Major and her partner Batou in action again, and less of those scary-looking spider leg people.

This past weekend, Paramount Pictures kicked off the publicity tour for its upcoming Ghost in the Shell adaptation with a global launch party in Tokyo. Cast and crew were on hand to talk about the film; exhibitions of the film’s art and costume designs were on display for those in attendance. For the rest of us, something even better was announce: the first theatrical trailer for Ghost in the Shell is here, and it is not exactly short on style.

Back when the Ghost in the Shell casting news was announced, people were understandably confused that Scarlett Johansson would be playing a character whose origins and race, as far as we all knew, were Japanese. Despite protests, production on the movie ensued, and we got our first look at the anime adaptation in a few short teasers a few weeks ago. Now, the director of the original animated Ghost in the Shell films, Mamoru Oshii, has visited the set and seen everything for himself, and it sounds like he’s not upset at all about Johansson’s casting.

Following yesterday’s premiere of the intriguing teaser for the full Ghost in the Shell trailer (debuting on November 13), a new video from the set of the live-action adaptation has arrived online. It doesn’t reveal much in the way of new footage, but it does feature a quick, charming interview with Scarlett Johansson, who offers a sneak peek at one of the film’s many action sequences.

I don’t know exactly what is happening in this teaser for the new Ghost in the Shell trailer, but it’s really, really, really rad. It looks like Scarlett Johansson is a Terminator exiting the Matrix — now there’s a movie idea we can all get behind. My weird film fantasies aside, this short sneak peek at the live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation definitely accomplishes its mission: We can’t wait to see the full trailer.

Scarlett Johansson Says a Black Widow Solo Movie Needs to Happen Sooner Than Later
Scarlett Johansson has played Natasha Romanoff in five Marvel movies, five, and yet she still hasn’t gotten her own Black Widow solo movie. It’s kind of crazy, especially since fans have been clamoring for the female superhero to get her own film for ages – just this summer a new poll found that audiences want a Black Widow movie over any other Avengers character. Kevin Feige recently ignited some hope, saying Marvel is “committed” to giving the superhero her own movie, the Russo brothers called it a “no-brainer,” and Joss Whedon is down to direct. Now Johansson has chimed in to share her ideas for a solo movie.
