It’s been some time since The Flash producers cryptically suggested that Season 3 would take us to the famed Gorilla City of DC lore, and we’re not ones to keep a malevolent ape waiting. Reports confirm that Season 3 will bring back Grodd at some point in 2017, but how?

We're looking back at the long and weird history of superhero comics by picking our favorite heroes from each decade in our latest fantasy draft. Each team must include one character who debuted before 1950, one character that debuted in each decade from the '50s to the '90s, and one character that debuted in 2000 or beyond, plus two wildcard picks from before and after 1980, for a total team of nine characters. Two different methods of time-travel between The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow were bound to leave history a little screwy, something Arrow fans found out the hard way with a bizarre “Flashpoint” change. Granted, said timeline-tweak could have connected Arrow to the “Star City 2046” of Legends’ first season, producers now admit to some uncertainty with their take on John Diggle Jr. and Connor Hawke.

Not long ago, we published a list of suggestions for how Warner Bros. could fix some of the issues with the DC Extended Universe. To date, the studio has delivered three superhero blockbusters — all of which were massively budgeted and hugely successful at the box office, sure, but they could have performed even better had they been genuinely good films. Although recent comments from WB execs and Ben Affleck imply that the studio has learned a few lessons from its mistakes, new comments from a top DC movies producer prove otherwise.

If ever The Flash found reason to invoke Back to the Future, 2017 would be it. Our first look at Season 3's January return trailer sees Barry and Cisco trying to return to the the future vision that saw Iris’ deadly fate at the hands of Savitar, while Caitlin seems to be struggling with her own destiny.

The Flash closed out the first half of Season 3 with an expected reveal of Dr. Alchemy’s identity, as well as a new puzzle for 2017: a captive Savitar teasing that one of Barry’s team would “fall,” while another would betray them, and a third would suffer “a fate far worse than death.” Winter finale “The Present” even seemingly showed us one of the three, though producers say the scene may have been misinterpreted.

The Flash has a habit of keeping its speedster big bads in play, between Reverse Flash recurring throughout the franchise, or Teddy Sears’ Zoom undergoing a familiar transformation in the Season 2 finale. Don’t expect the disfigured Hunter Zolomon to return as the so-called “Black Flash,” however, as Sears doubts his availability.

Now that The CW’s four-way “Invasion!” crossover is behind us, Flash and Supergirl fans have the two-part musical crossover to look forward to in 2017. Some wild rumors early on suggested Joss Whedon might direct the crossover with Neil Patrick Harris reprising a famous role, but the Unfortunate Events star doesn’t seem to know much of anything about it.

Even as each series seemed to quietly sweep things under the rug thereafter, The CW’s four-way “Invasion!” crossover gave ample opportunity for some unexpected bonds between characters. At least some scenes understandably ended up cut for time, as with a new deleted scene of H.R. and Thea’s tense first meeting.
