Superhero Color Theory, Part IV: The Outliers

week-4

What does your favourite superheroes' colors tell the audience about their personalities? Using the same color theory people use to group-think a corporate logo, or paint their room, we've been exploring what it means to superhero comics.

Last time we mentioned that The Invisible Woman's blue and white is wise, and elemental, but what does invisible mean as a color? The Wasp's one constant through her many costume changes has been her transparent, flighty wings. And while Kitty Pryde, who also can't seem to settle on a costumes (or a name), isn't transparent as a color, she does actually pass through things.

The new Wasp is at the center of All-New All-Different Avengers #9, which launches a new storyline called "Family Business." Until her debut on Free Comic Book Day, we don't know who this knew Wasp really is. Her face is revealed on one of the unlettered preview pages below, but all that really tells us is that she wears her hair in roughly the same style as Hope Van Dyne, the soon-to-be-Wasp played by Evangeline Lily in the Ant-Man movie.

No ‘Slingers’ Revival: Marvel Hints At All-New Wasp And ‘Dead No More’ Event

marvelteasers-feat

Marvel released a bafflingly oblique teaser image on Tuesday, the words 'DEAD NO MORE' against a black background, prompting fans to speculate which of Marvel's heroes is next in line for a resurrection, even as they're debating which hero will die (for a while) in the pages of Civil War II.

Before any kind of consensus could be achieved, Marvel released a second teaser today, 'BEST BEWARE MY STING', against a black and yellow background. A quote from Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, the line and colors both suggest the character Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne. But Janet already came back from the dead; surely the first teaser can't be about her? So what other theories do we have? Well... is it possible that Marvel is hinting at a relaunch of Slingers?

‘Ant-Man’ Concept Art Reveals a Great New Look at The Wasp

Ant Man Wasp Concept Art
Marvel/Andy Park

Marvel’s Ant-Man did a solid job of establishing its title character as a significant player in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also laid the groundwork for another story of equal interest. In flashbacks to Hank Pym’s world-saving days, we meet his wife, Janet, aka The Wasp, a superhero who one-ups her partner’s shrinking abilities with some pretty badass wings. Unfortunately, we only catch a few brief glimpses of this iconic Marvel heroine in the midst of a very hectic action scene. Fortunately, some newly revealed concept art now allows us to pick apart the details of her costume like real nerds.

Cosplayers Take Center Stage on Marvel’s Cosplay Variant Covers this Fall

marvel-cosplay-feat

You know how much we love cosplay at ComicsAlliance; we put a spotlight on it every week. Fans who create their own costumes and dress up as their favorite heroes are some of the most passionate and enthusiastic people in comics, and the level of talent and committment on display at conventions seems to get more impressive every year. If there isn't a Carol Corps cosplay meet-up or a whole dang Spider-Verse at a show, you'll probably go home disappointed.

So it's great to see Marvel paying tribute to these fans with a selection of cosplay variant covers on several of its All-New All-Different launches this fall. The Marvel Cosplay variants place fans of Spider-Gwen, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Thor (both versions) and more on the covers of the books they love. Cosplay connoisseurs will see some familiar faces among the cosplayers, including Birds of Play's Amanda Lynne Shafer, cosplay legend Yaya Han, and Marvel's own in-house cosplay blogger Judy Stephens as Captain Marvel.

How ‘Ant-Man’ Highlights the Sad State of Marvel’s Female Characters

Hope Van Dyne Ant-Man
Marvel

It’s funny, fitting, and sort of cruel that Ant-Man’s version of the Wasp is named Hope.

The comic-book version of the Wasp is named Janet van Dyne, the longtime romantic and crime-fighting associate of Hank Pym’s Ant-Man. The film’s Ant-Man is Scott Lang (Paul Rudd); its Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is an older man who retired many years earlier. Hope (Evangeline Lilly) is his daughter, grown to adulthood and desperate for the opportunity to be a hero. Her father, though, has other ideas.
