X-Men Apocalypse

Promotional tie-ins are a normal part of franchise movie marketing, but you usually expect stuff like McDonald's Happy Meal toys or collectible Slurpee cups or whatever. But something like a major realtor corporation? That's...kind of unusual. And ads for Coldwell Banker are probably the last place you'd expect to see new footage for X-Men: Apocalypse, but here we are.

This is definitely the coolest piece of marketing for X-Men: Apocalypse, and whoever came up with it over at Fox most certainly deserves a raise. Inspired by the classic In Search Of docuseries hosted by Leonard Nimoy, this promo for a fictional series titled In the Footsteps Of… briefly explores the origins of Oscar Isaac’s X-Men villain. But the best part is definitely the choice to have Nimoy’s former Star Trek co-star George Takei serve as narrator.

Grain of salt warning, as this rumor is nowhere near confirmed, but feel free to file it somewhere between “plausible” and “probable.” While Fox has been working to expand their X-Men spinoff films and nurturing Deadpool’s corner of that universe, the studio has yet to announce the next proper X-Men sequel. Bryan Singer has expressed interest in returning to the franchise after he films 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which means it could be a few years or so before another X-Men movie hits theaters. In the meantime, the latest rumor about the future of X-Men suggests a film that could make some fans pretty happy.

Can a trailer spoil a film if the scenes in question are taken out of context? That’s been an ongoing debate among movie fans for some time, but here’s a new question: Can a trailer itself be spoiled? Well, if this X-Men: Apocalypse rumor is correct (and it probably is), then consider this post a spoiler for the new trailer, which will reportedly arrive online after it premieres this week at Cinema-Con in Las Vegas. The spoiler-sensitive among you should probably turn back now.

Most fans were disappointed (to say the least) by X-Men: The Last Stand, which took one of the most popular X-Men arcs — The Dark Phoenix Saga — and turned it into an Evanescence music video that ultimately did Jean Grey and Scott Summers a major disservice. But Bryan Singer is getting another chance with the beloved mutant couple in X-Men: Apocalypse, which will effectively reboot the characters thanks to that timeline reset in Days of Future Past. Singer shares some thoughts on what we can expect from the newer, younger duo, giving us hope for a little Dark Phoenix redemption.

We have a pretty stacked summer ahead of us, kicking off in May with Captain America: Civil War, followed by the (hopefully) equally epic X-Men: Apocalypse. The mutants of First Class and Days of Future Past are no longer the new kids on the block, as younger versions of Jean Grey, Scott Summers and more are getting in on the action in the upcoming sequel. To better familiarize you with the lineup, 20th Century Fox has released several new character posters which boast various mutants old and new along with their respective powers.

The X-Men universe’s latest baddie may be the biggest — and oldest — of them all, and as noted by Rose Byrne’s Moira MacTaggert, he’s always got a little extra help in the form of four followers, known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (clever). Joining the ancient mutant villain’s team are Magneto, Storm, Angel and Psylocke, all profiled in the latest featurette for X-Men: Apocalypse, which offers a bunch of new footage from the upcoming film.

As X-Men:Apocalypse approaches, fans have been treated to a surplus of film stills and promotional images, including several posters showing the film’s opposing teams of X-Men and Horsemen. While Apocalypse and his mutant flunkies are dressed in armor, which we’ll accept, because it's Apocalypse, the X-Men are wearing black ops-style uniforms that look so much like the costumes from a Hunger Games sequel that you could be looking at a “Katniss and the Districts” band poster. There has been plenty of fanboy outcry about Jennifer Lawrence’s non-indigo appearance in the film’s promo materials, and righly so; Mystique’s sense of mutant pride has been a plot vehicle in both the past and current X-Men movies. While Mystique’s missing scales are a problem, what's even more worrisome is the lack of originality or care in the X-team’s looks.

Almost exactly a year ago, Jennifer Lawrence told MTV that the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse would be her last X-Men movie. This surprised absolutely no one. In five years, Lawrence has been nominated for four Oscars, winning one in 2012 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and by all accounts — after filming two massive trilogies over that same timespan — seemed ready to move on to a new phase of her career. But, alas, maybe not? Now the actress says she is “dying to come back” for even more X-Men sequels.

Hugh Jackman has been rumored to have a part — albeit probably small — in X-Men: Apocalypse for some time. Although the upcoming sequel to The Wolverine will be the actor’s final outing as the iconic X-Men character, there’s still a chance he could appear in Apocalypse, which closes out Bryan Singer’s current trilogy. In addition to maybe-sorta-kinda confirming Jackman’s part in Apocalypse, Singer talks the future of the franchise and his continued involvement in it.
