Why So Serious: Warner Bros. Reportedly Orders ‘No Jokes’ In New DC Comics Movies

superman why so serious

Comics fans have become well acquainted with the notion that sometimes, creative people learn the wrong things from successes. It's why certain comics have been dominated for going on 30 years by a "dark" and "mature" sensibility that often comes off as grim, self-serious and overcooked.

Well, get ready for that way of thinking to make its way to movie theaters very soon. According to a report at Hitfix, Warner Bros. has a strict rule for its upcoming DC Comics movies: "No jokes."

Costume01

As much as a good many vocal fans absolutely hate that he'll be playing Batman in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ben Affleck seems like a pretty OK guy. He's even, according to a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, taking the hatred more or less in stride.

Zack Snyder Called Into A Detroit Radio Show To Defend Aquaman’s Honor

2734033-aquaman

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder apparently has a superpower: The ability to know when radio DJs are talking smack about Aquaman.

Last week, after the on-air personalities on Detroit's sports-talk radio station The Ticket spoke somewhat disparagingly about the character, who will reportedly be played by Jason Momoa in the upcoming Batman V Superman, Snyder called in to school them about Aquaman's "cool abilities."

Comics Alliance Roundtable: Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Costume For ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice’

Untitled-3

One of the most discussed news items from last month's Comic-Con International was the first look at Wonder Woman as she will appear in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the new DC Entertainment film by Zack Snyder. Played by Gal Gadot, this will be the first cinematic appearance of William Moulton Marston's Amazonian princess and feminist icon in her nearly 75-year history, and naturally fans have had a lot to say about the portrait debuted in San Diego. In reaction to the image, members of the ComicsAlliance staff assembled to discuss and critique Gadot's costume, depictions of super-women on film, and the current state of superheroine fashion in general.

Today's participants include CA's superheroic sartorialist Betty Felon; clinical psychologist and Arkham Sessions co-host Dr. Andrea Letamendi; comic book editor Janelle Asselin; journalist Juliet Kahn; comics writer/artist Kate Leth; and blogger/vlogger Angelina L.B. aka ALB, who makes her CA debut in this in-depth analysis. Join us for our roundtable discussion on Wonder Woman's newest live-action steez, high heels, and the balance between practicality/realism and style in superheroine costume design.

New Portrait Of Ben Affleck’s Glorious Bat Chin Sighted In San Diego

Untitled-1

The cunning folks at DC Entertainment snuck an exclusive new image of Ben Affleck's Batman out into the world by hiding it in plain sight at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The DC booth features a montage of Batman images celebrating the Dark Knight's 75th anniversary -- and in among those images is a never-before-seen picture of Batfleck's impressive Bat chin in profile.

We already saw a fuzzy glimpse of Batfleck from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder earlier this year -- and we noticed at the time how very Frank Millery it looks. Earlier today we also gawked at Batfleck's cape and cowl on the convention floor -- and it was but a spectral apparition without a meaty Ben Affleck to fill it.

The Dark Man Of Steel Returns: Henry Cavill’s Superman Is Back And Wetter Than Ever

Untitled-1

Superman has arrived in Gotham City -- that, or he's surveying the apocalyptic wasteland that is Metropolis in the wake of his terrible wrath in Man of Steel. Either of those scenarios may be reflected in a new promotional image released in support of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the new Zack Snyder film based on the DC Comics superheroes created by Bill Finger & Bob Kane and Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster.

‘Man Of Steel’ Sequel Will Be Called ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ For Some Reason

Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice
Warner Bros.

The new Man of Steel sequel, which has also been referred to widely as Batman Vs. Superman because it features both heroes in lead roles, has a title, and surprisingly, it doesn't include the words "dark," "shadows," "black," or even "knight" in it, as we had previously guessed.

Nope, this one's hilarious for entirely different reasons. Coming to theaters May 6, 2016: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.

Zack Snyder Reveals Batmobile And Batfleck’s Batsuit From ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

Batman and Batmobile, via Zack Snyder

Hot on the heels of yesterday's teaser about the Batmobile that's going to be appearing in Man of Steel 2, AKA Batman Vs. Superman, AKA Justice League Prequel: Avengers Made A Billion Dollars So I Guess We're Doing That Now, director Zack Snyder has delivered on his promise by revealing not just more of the car, but, in a surprising twist, Batman himself, as played by Ben Affleck.

As for the Batmobile, well, we still don't get a very good look at it, but considering that Batman himself shows up, I think that's as fair a tradeoff as we can be expecting. And if you were worried that he might not be frowning enough, set your mind at ease. He definitely looks pretty upset for a dude standing next to a rocket car. Maybe he's bummed because everything is under an inch of soot?
