Untitled-1

Welcome to the latest episode of ComicsAlliance Presents “Kate or Die,” a series of exclusive comic strips created by one of our favorite cartoonists, Kate Leth! In this episode, Kate offers some words of encouragement to the creators and publishers putting forth new women-friendly superhero comics, including Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and the ferociously well received news of a Batgirl revamp by Cameron Stewart, Babs Tarr and Brendan Fletcher.

Best Art Ever (This Week): New-Look Batgirl Fan Art Edition

batgirl-samandfuzzy

It's always nice to have a good news day in comics -- and DC probably agrees after the rapturous reception to yesterday's announcement of the new direction for Batgirl from the new creative team of Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, Jordie Bellaire, and new discovery Babs Tarr (who we've been telling you about for aaages).

Judging by all the Batgirl fan-art produced since yesterday's announcement, we feel sure there's a big appetite out there for a Batgirl comic deliberately designed to appeal to a female and family audience -- and for Batgirl's smartly designed and stylish new costume. With credit to Batgirl fan ComixBookGurl for her Twitter call-to-action, we collected all the new Batgirl fan art we could find in order to celebrate what may be the best Batgirl... ever?

‘Batgirl’ To Become Best Possible DC Comic With New Creators Cameron Stewart, Babs Tarr And Brenden Fletcher

batgirl-babstarr2header

The past few weeks have brought some truly surprising and exciting announcements from the Batman corner of the the DC Universe, but this one tops them all. Today it was announced that Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher would be taking over as the new writers of Batgirl, with Stewart providing covers and layouts for new comics artist Babs Tarr.

Any one of those creators alone would be a pretty big deal deal, but while Stewart and Fletcher are pretty intriguing choices for the adventures of Barbara Gordon, the biggest news by far is Tarr, who will be best known to ComicsAlliance readers for her incredible cosplay-inspiring art and frequent appearances in the Best Art Ever (This Week) feature. This is, to say the least, a move that we never saw coming but are completely in favor of.

Batman Writer Alan Brennert, ‘Gotham’, And The Truth About DC Comics Media Royalties

Untitled-2

A favorite among many longtime and hardcore Batman fans, writer Alan Brennert released a statement on Facebook this week regarding his lack of compensation for the use of the character Barbara Kean Gordon in the upcoming Fox TV show Gotham, a live-action series based on the Batman characters. Brennert wrote a story in 1981 where the character was created as the fiancée of then-Lt. James Gordon. While it was an out-of-continuity story, the character was later brought into canon as Commissioner Gordon’s wife (most notably in Batman: Year One, and in the films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight). In the television series' pilot episode -- which ComicsAlliance staffers have seen and verified -- Barbara Kean is introduced as James Gordon's bride-to-be, played by Erin Richards.

For this reason, Brennert requested equity in the character and compensation for her use in Gotham – a request that has been denied, which has in turn inspired consternation among Brennert's fans, industry observers and other creators.

Lady She-Woman: Female Superhero Codenames and Identity

Untitled-2

Monica Rambeau is on her fourth superhero codename. In the pages of Mighty Avengers she's Spectrum, having previously gone by Captain Marvel, Photon and Pulsar. The Captain Marvel identity now belongs to Carol Danvers, also on her fourth codename after Ms. Marvel, Binary and Warbird. Her first codename now belongs to Kamala Khan, the fourth Ms. Marvel after Danvers, Sharon Ventura and Karla Sofen.

But Carol is actually the third woman (and seventh character) to call herself Captain Marvel in the Marvel Universe. The second woman was Phyla-Vell, who was the fourth Captain Marvel after she was the second Quasar, before she was the first Martyr, before she saved herself the trouble of another codename by dying. Oh, those women! They never know who they are!

New ‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ Screenshots Deliver More Oracle, Commissioner Gordon, And Batmobile Launching

Batman: Arkham Knight screenshot

As Batman: Arkham Knight, the next entry in the popular video game franchise about Batman beating the criminally insane into submission in asylums of increasingly improbable sizes and complexity, draws nearer, we're starting to get to the point where we're getting a steady stream of information about the game. Today, with the release of a new set of screenshots, we got some of the most interesting news of all.

According to the latest screens, after appearances as a voice in a headset in the past three games, Barbara Gordon will finally be appearing as Oracle. That's big news for fans fans, but to be honest, that stuff about the Batmobile shooting you out of the roof like James Bond's ejector seat will probably have a bigger impact on gameplay.
