I Wanted This To Be Dangerous: Black Mask’s Matt Pizzolo Talks ‘Godkiller’ And Pushing The Limits Of Comics [Interview]

GodkillerHeader

Since co-founding Black Mask Studios with 30 Days Of Night writer Steve Niles and Epitaph Records owner (and legendary punk musician) Brett Gurewitz in 2012, Matt Pizzolo has established the company as a home for all manner of genre-busting, boundary-pushing comic books – their initial slate included the all-star Occupy Comics project, Darick Robertson and Adam Mortimer's hyper-violent sci-fi series Ballistic, Matt Miner's animal-liberation vigilante yarn Liberator, and Matthew Rosenberg and Ghostface Killah's 12 Reasons To Die.

Black Mask is now in the process of launching their second wave of titles, and first out the gate is Pizzolo's return to the role of comic creator, collaborating with artist Anna Muckcracker Wieszczyk on a new incarnation of his dystopian multi-media Godkiller project. Upon its release last month, Godkiller: Walk Among Us #1 became Black Mask's first ever title to go to a second-printing, and with #2 hitting comic shop shelves this week, we sat down to talk to Pizzolo about the inspirations for the series, his collaborative process, and his vision for Black Mask as a creative and commercial endeavor.

Hire This Woman: Artist Alison Sampson

Untitled-1

In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”

Architect and artist Alison Sampson is relatively new to the world of comics, but has done work for both IDW Publishing and Image. In addition to her Image one-shot Genesis with writer Nathan Edmondson (on sale this week), Sampson is also working on the comic Winnebago Graveyard with writer Steve Niles for Black Mask.

After months (or, really, years) of buildup, Batman: Arkham Origins is hitting store shelves today. With all the stuff we've seen from the game so far, it hardly seems to need to prove much to fans, but a set of launch-day screenshots proves something, anyway: There will be fighting. Lots and lots of fightng.

Batman Arkham Origins Launch Trailer
WB Games Montreal

It's Christmas Eve. A bunch of assassins are out to earn a $50 million bounty on Batman's head. And boy, do they want it.

The new launch trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins spends quite a bit of time on just how much the bad guys want Batman dead, with phrases like "personal mission" and "dedicate every waking minute." It's intense. Check out the trailer after the jump.

New ‘Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate’ Trailer Reveals Solomon Grundy, More [Video]

Blackgate

Not to be overshadowed by its big-console brother, the WB Games handheld prison-action game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is showing off some of the trick it's got up its "Metroid-Vania" sleeve.

Among them: A lot of bad guys, including The Joker, The Penguin, Black Mask, Deadshot, and the just-revealed Solomon Grundy. Catwoman's there, too (and also in a new screen shot from the game). See if you can spot any more in the trailer after the cut.

Batman: Arkham Origins

A new trailer for WB Games Montreal's Batman: Arkham Origins offers a reminder that the Dark Knight's got "eight assassins after head," and offers up a pretty good look at what he'll be dealing with. Big boss Black Mask, The Joker, Bane, Deathstroke, Copperhead, and the just-announced Firefly all make appearances. Not only that, but pair of cutscenes with Alfred and James Gordon (presumably before he was a commissioner... maybe lieutenant?) are featured, too.

The trailer also gives fans their first good listens to the new voices for Batman and The Joker -- Roger Craig Smith and Troy Baker -- who seem to be doing their best Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill impressions. See it all in motion after the jump.
