In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”
The shift from summer to fall brings with it scarves, hoodies, pumpkin spice... everything and, for Boom! Studios, special comic book covers and prints. Yes, New York Comic Con 2013 is nearly upon us, and Boom! is prepared with a lineup of exclusives that will be available at Booth 1344 come October 10-13. In anticipation, Boom! has given ComicsAlliance a first-look at all of its NYCC Adventure Time, Sons of Anarchy, Polarity, Day Men and The Midas Flesh offerings. Click through for a full look at the entire lineup of Boom!, Kaboom! and new Boom! Box items.
Regular Show's super strong immortal sage (who just so happens to be voiced by Mark Hamill) is about to step into the comic book spotlight. This November Boom! Studios will roll out Regular Show: Skips #1, written and illustrated by Mad Rupert (Saskana, Adventure Time). Set to show the RS world from Skips' point of view, the story sees Pops reward Mordecai, Rigby and the rest of the crew with a mini-vacation for all their hard work at the park. Thanks to the antics of his coworkers, though, Skips probably won't quite get the rest and relaxation he deserves for bailing his buds out of trouble time and time again. ComicsAlliance got in touch with Rupert to learn more about what readers can expect in the issue, how the artist got into Regular Show, and just how much she loves pugs.
Mike Kunkel's celebrated duo returned in an all new adventure this past June at Boom Studios in Herobear and the Kid Special #1, but this week fans can catch up on the Eisner Award-winning storyline that started it all. Herobear & The Kid: Inheritance #1 arrives in stores and on ComiXology this week, introducing readers to Tyler, his magical best friend and the secret that binds them together. What's more, the new issue contains fresh art and other bonus material. ComicsAlliance got in touch with Kunkel to get his take on storytelling, his latest art approach and what's next for Herobear at Boom!'s all-ages Kaboom! imprint. You can read the interview, plus a six-page preview of the remastered first issue, after the cut.
This Friday, 2 Guns, a movie about two undercover drug agents who begrudgingly have to work together and that stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, opens in theaters. Most people who see it won't have any idea it was based on a comic book by writer Steven Grant and artist Mateus Santolouco. And yet Grant probably made more money from selling the movie rights than anyone who's written a Wolverine comic will make from The Wolverine, The New York Times explains.
Every year around this time, shops and advertisers start harshing the collective mellow of millions of youngsters by rolling out back-to-school gear. But have heart, students! There's still several weeks of summer left and you can readily savor the spirit of fun-in-the-sun with next Wednesday's Adventure Time: Summer Special 2013 #1. Containing stories by Noelle Stevenson, Ryan Pequin, Emily Partridge and the team of Frank Gibson and Becky Dreisdat, the issue promises sunburnless stories starring heroes who are on an eternal summer vacation (although Finn could probably use some math lessons, if we're all being honest with ourselves). Boom! has provided us with an early look at the special issue, and you can read it all after the jump.
When it comes to San Diego Comic-Con, every publisher approaches the show a little bit differently. Whether they house cosplay contests, interactive displays, photo ops with talent, creator signings and/or a whole lot of purchasable product, SDCC booths are an opportunity for the publishers that can attend to make a big impression on one of the most attended pop culture gatherings of the year. You can get a sampling of what publishers like Marvel, DC, Archie, Boom!, IDW, 2000 AD, Dark Horse, Image, Fantagraphics, Oni and others were up to on the show floor of this year's SDCC after the cut.
This October, Boom! Studios' ongoing Adventure Time title by writer Ryan North and artists Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb will get expressive covers raised by wolves, charging into the future, posing for an anime style photo op and gazing across a sea of sprawling color...
Between the talents of writer Joey Comeau, artist Mike Holmes and cover artists Tyson Hesse, Kory Bing, Ian McGinty and Jongmee Kim, Boom! Studios is hardly has to twist anyone's arm to read its ongoing all-ages Bravest Warriors comic. Still, if they want to promise more Catbug in Bravest Warriors #13, well, that should suit everyone with a heart just fine. Boom! has provided CA with a first look at the upcoming October issue, along with the promise of more page time for perhaps the cutest new character from the year 3085.
Max Bemis and artist Jorge Coelho's bombastic, well... funnyhyperviolentintrospectiveactionromance comic known as Polarity concludes on July 3 with issue #4, bringing to a close one of my favorite limited series of the year. Initially (and quite happily) surprised by the book's sheer resonance back in April, it's been rad to ride along for the Say Anything/Two Tongues frontman's fun dialogue and Coelho's fluid art, which at times (especially with the colors of Felipe Sobreiro) feels evocative of the extraordinary Kevin O'Neill -- if O'Neill were a little more into v-necks and cardigans Boom! Studios has provided CA with a first look at the issue, along with its cover by Frazier Irving, which you can preview past the cut.
