The Light and Dark of L.A. Noir: Return to the World of ‘Hit’ with ‘Hit 1957′ #1 [Review]

Hit: 1955 was one of the best crime comics of 2013, a whiskey-soaked LA noir about a detective on a police hit squad that took on the mob. In their follow-up, Hit: 1957, the team of Bryce Carlson and Vanesa Del Rey dive back into the darkness for more.

A ‘Hit’ Piece On Cover Artist Ryan Sook

Boom Studios Hit Ryan Sook Cover #3 process ComicsAlliance

On sale now from BOOM! Studios is Hit #3, the penultimate issue of the 1950s Los Angeles crime drama written by Bryce Carlson and drawn by Vanessa R. Del Rey. Part of the publisher's We Are Boom campaign spotlighting original (as opposed to licensed) works, Hit has received decent word-of-mouth and the first issue even sold out of its initial print run of 10,000 copies. Contributing to that success is the cover artwork of comics veteran Ryan Sook, whose Hit work is a distinctly gritty departure from the artist's traditionally shiny, even inspiring superhero illustrations for DC Comics and others. The covers are a good fit with Del Rey's scratchy but sexy sequentials, which combined with the moody palette of Archie Van Buren and the period-appropriate lettering and design of Ed Dukeshire and Hanna Nance Partlow makes Hit one of the more attractive packages coming out of BOOM Studios at the moment.

We had a chance to see some of Sook's preliminary cover concepts for this week's Hit #3, which were quite striking and prompted some questions about his process. The artist was gracious enough to answer them.

Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular Frazer Irving
Boom! Studios

We were intrigued by the entire lineup of talent when Boom! Studios announced its Adventure Time: 2013 Spoooktacular #1 back in July, but given his stints on the appropriately spooky Seven Soldiers: Klarion the Witch Boy, Hellblazer, Xombi, Shade and other titles, we were especially curious to see how Frazer Irving would play in the Land of Ooo. Thanks to a three-page first look from Boom! fans can finally scope out an unlettered preview of the artist's team up with writer Bryce Carlson, which just so happens to involve mustaches. Lots of mustaches.

‘Adventure Time 2013 Spoooktacular’ Coming From Boom! In Time For Halloween

While traditional holidays didn't necessarily carry over into the Land of Ooo after the nuclear apocalypse a.k.a. "Mushroom War," Adventure Time's supernatural-filled setting is certainly ripe for Halloween-y scary stories. With that in mind, Boom! Studios is rolling out the Adventure Time 2013 Spoooktacular special this October featuring tales of the tricky and treat-y variety by Jen Bennett, Bryce Carlson, Ming Doyle, Jones Wiedle, Jay Hosler, Kevin Church, Frazer Irving, and Jen Vaughn. Illustrating the special's covers will be Becky Dreistadt, Doyle and Wiedle. Full story details are still forthcoming, but you can give the upcoming Spoooktacular's covers a closer look after the cut.
