The big story of the week is the acquisition of leading digital comics retailer ComiXology by Amazon.com. ComiXology has facilitated over 200 million downloads of digital comics, making it the largest provider of American comic books from nearly every major publisher as well as small press and independent creators. Amazon.com is one of if not the biggest retailers of, well, everything in the world, including a leading seller of digital content in the form of music, video and electronic books. What does this acquisition mean for Comixology and the American comic book industry as a whole? To address these questions and ask even more besides, Senior Editor Andy Khouri is joined tthis week by Heidi MacDonald, Editor-in-Chief of comics news and culture site The Beat; Matt D. Wilson, ComicsAlliance contributor and the writer of the digital comic book Copernicus Jones, Robot Detective; and Alison Baker and Chris Roberson, publishers of Monkeybrain Comics, an imprint with an exclusive digital distribution deal with ComiXology.

On the table for discussion: An Asian American advocacy group petitions Marvel to cast Iron Fist, a blond caucasian kung fu master in the comics, with an Asian American actor in the forthcoming Netflix series. We talk about why this is a great idea. After decades of waiting, there is to be a live action film based on 1980s iconic animated series, Jem and the Hologram, which will be crowdsourced on Tumblr. Unfortunately, Jem creator Christy Marx has been shut out of the project. We talk about why this is outrageous. Finally, the group analyzes the controversial Nerd HQ crowd funding campaign undertaken by actor Zachary Levi, who hopes to raise one million dollars to produce an off-site celebrity charity event during San Diego Comic-Con, raising questions both financial and cultural.

Welcome back to the ComicsAlliance podcast, covering the latest comic book entertainment news topics. Joining Senior Editors Andy Khouri and Caleb Goellner for this episode are Senior Writer Chris Sims and Staff Writer Andrew Wheeler, who discuss the nature of mainstream American comics with respect to idiosyncratic creators working on corporate properties -- particularly the artists drawing titles published by Marvel and DC Comics. The group also checks in on the Agents of SHIELD television series, which by most accounts is something of a misfire for the otherwise victorious filmed entertainment division of Marvel. Finally, we discuss the aesthetic impact the Arkham Asylum games may or may not be having on the ever popular Batman universe of comic books and other stories and products.

Stephenson made a characteristically iconoclastic and not altogether unassailable presentation, urging retailers to become community leaders, abandon their support of gimmicky, high-priced publishing practices, and draw a distinction between good and bad comics. We’ll contrast Stephenson’s remarks with those of Dan DiDio, his counterpart at DC Comics, one of the stop superhero publishers, who in an interview this week confirmed plans to double— even triple-down — on weekly comics, crossovers and 3D covers, publishing strategies that are seemingly exactly the sort of thing Stephenson that criticized.
