‘Deadpool 2’ Is Rumored to Begin Production in January
This hasn’t been a great month for Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool 2. Between the departure of director Tim Miller and the loss of composer Junkie XL, the sequel to the breakout superhero hit has been losing momentum at a time where it should be locking in the moving parts for the next iteration of the film. That still hasn’t stopped 20th Century Fox from pushing forward with the sequel, which apparently will begin shooting as early as January 2017, production problems be darned.

And another one bites the dust. Following the surprising departure of director Tim Miller last week, the Deadpool sequel has lost another creative component, as composer Junkie XL has exited the project. In a personal statement on his Facebook page, the composer says he decided to leave the sequel as a show of solidarity for Miller, who clashed with star Ryan Reynolds over the creative direction of Deadpool 2.

It’s been a rough week for the nascent Deadpool franchise. Last weekend, the original film’s director Tim Miller announced that he would not return to helm the planned sequel despite his fanbase’s widely held assumptions. Miller never signed any paperwork committing him to the project, and clarified his position on Saturday, citing creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds as the key reason for his abstaining. It left the producers in something of a bind, scrambling to lock down new talent before principal photography gets going early next year.

Nothing gums up the works during a high-profile film shoot quite like looky-loos poking around the set. When a big-name production gets up and going, the goal is to attract as little outside attention as possible, leading many crews to adopt “working titles” that conceal the true nature of the project. Most famously, George Lucas shot Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi under the codename “Blue Harvest” in an effort to give his legions of fans the slip. Christopher Nolan, perhaps in an effort to evade Batman geeks and summon Gilmore Girls geeks in one fell swoop, worked on The Dark Knight using the title “Rory’s First Kiss.” More recently, one of the production designers for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters informed me during an interview that the remake shot as “Flapjack” while on set in Massachusetts.

When we heard this weekend that Tim Miller had quit the Deadpool sequel due to the all-too-common “creative differences,” we knew something had gone very, very wrong. Miller had clashed with the film’s star Ryan Reynolds, who had been lobbying to get his version of the merc with a mouth into theaters since even before his ill-fated attempt at the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds loves the character, and Miller managed to make fifteen times the budget of the first movie on its release. So what went wrong? Apparently, the clash that caused Miller to bow out of the sequel came about because two separate groups were campaigning for two entirely different movies.

When Tim Miller exited Deadpool 2 over creative differences (with Ryan Reynolds, of all people!) we were pretty shocked. The first Deadpool was great, an R-rated, funny, and blood-soaked respite from the formula we’ve come to expect from Marvel, and the prospect of a sequel was equally as exciting. But with Miller’s exit, Deadpool’s future has become a little more uncertain — so uncertain, that fans have set up their own petition to get Quentin Tarantino for the sequel instead.

One of the biggest Hollywood success stories of the past few years was Deadpool, the R-rated superhero movie from 20th Century Fox. From dead in the water to surprise box office smash, Deadpool became a perfect parable for young filmmakers who have a story to tell and won’t let failure stand in the way of getting their movie made. Unfortunately, though, life doesn’t always adhere to clean narratives. Despite all the setbacks that Deadpool director Tim Miller faced along the way, it turns out there was only one thing that could cause him to throw in the towel: success.

Sometimes, when you have a surprise hit on your hands, you get a little bit of freedom to go outside the box with your casting choices on the sequels. That seems to be the approach taken by the producers of Deadpool 2, anyways. A few weeks ago, we wrote about the rumors that Kyle Chander and Mackenzie Davis were atop the wishlist for Cable and Domino, respectively, in the next Deadpool movie. And now Davis has spoken openly about her lack of conversations regarding the role.

Here’s some news that’ll make you raise an eyebrow: An interesting rumor regarding Deadpool 2 began circulating over the weekend, specifically regarding the casting of Cable, the villainous character teased in the Deadpool post-credits scene. Stephen Lang, Dolph Lundgren and Ron Perlman have all tossed their hat in the ring for the part, but if this new report is true, then Fox may be taking a slightly different approach to the character.
