With New York Comic-Con coming up this weekend, many publishers are saving up their big announcements for the Javits Center. IDW Publishing, however, has decided to get the jump on everyone by releasing their first big announcement a few days early, and it's one that we're definitely looking forward to. Following on the success of Super Secret Crisis War, the Cartoon Network crossover event, IDW has announced Powerpuff Girls Super Smash-Up, a new ongoing series that will team Townsville's favorite heroines up with Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo and more -- and the series will be written and drawn by Derek Charm. To find out more about the series, scheduled to kick off this January, we spoke to Charm about more about the premise of the series, which characters we can look forward to, and whether the Talking Dog will finally get his starring role.

Jack Kirby: A 'King-Sized' 97th Birthday Spectacular, Part 1
Jack Kirby is very arguably the single most influential figure in the history of American comics. He produced countless stories in a career that spanned seven decades, inventing and re-inventing genres and styles every step of the way. He inspired generations of artists and writers; created and co-created thousands of characters; defined the visual vocabulary of superheroes; and believed in the potential of comics to be both entertainment and art, long before most people imagined these stories would be remembered past the four weeks that they sat on newsstands. Today would have been Kirby’s 97th birthday, and to mark the occasion we’ve assembled a series of posts commemorating the life and work of the man known to American comics fans as “The King.” For this piece, we asked some of our favorite creators and other comics pros to celebrate Jack Kirby with their impressions of his characters, life, and legacy – and we got so many responses, we'll have another installment of all-star tributes tomorrow!

Best Convention Sketchbook Ever: Original Art From Comic-Con
Over the past few years, I've been toting around themed sketchbooks to conventions to get pieces of art from some of my favorite comic book creators, based on Jack Kirby's creations and tokusatsu heroes. This summer, however, I decided to switch things up a little and go with a much broader theme, since some people are not as familiar with the past 40 years of Kamen Rider as I'd like them to be. The result: A sketchbook full of my favorite characters. Now that I've been through HeroesCon and San Diego, I've gathered up a pretty solid bunch to start out with, and they're pretty amazing. Check below for this summer's crop of sketches from artists like Chris Burnham, Tom Fowler, Joëlle Jones, Ben Dewey and more!

I watched a lot of Cartoon Network in the '90s (and the 2000s, and the 2010s, but that's beside the point), and I distinctly remember thinking that if there was one thing that could really improve shows like Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, it would be throwing all the characters together into one big fight against robots, preferably while hanging out at San Diego's Comic-Con International. Fortunately for me, my dreams have once again made reality thanks to Derek Charm's variant cover for IDW's upcoming Cartoon Network crossover, Super Secret Crisis War! Not only will the series tell the tale of a crossover between the shows' heroes and villlains written by Charm and legendary writer Louise Simonson with art by Charm, but there's a SDCC variant cover featuring characters from the shows engaging in that most time-honored Comic-Con tradition: Cosplay! The City of Townsville, as you'll know if you read last month's The Powerpuff Girls #7, by CA favorite Derek Charm, is quite possibly facing its darkest moment ever. Well, except for that time Princess Morbucks made all crime legal. And when the villains formed an evil super-group called the Beat-Alls. And, you know, that time that they went into the future where Him took over and destroyed the to

If you've been reading ComicsAlliance for a while, you may already know that for the past few years, I've been working on filling up a sketchbook themed around Jack Kirby, but after three years and over fifty sketches, I thought it was finally time to retire it and move on to something else. That's why this year, I started up a new sketchbook themed around another influential comics creator: Shota

We've been excited about the amazing Derek Charm taking a shot at writing and drawing The Powerpuff Girls ever since IDW first announced his two-part story, and now, we are on the eve of Monster Day. PPG #7 is out next week, and with it, the City of Townsville comes under attack -- sort of -- by the residents of Monster Island, heckbent on having a good time and probably destroying huge swaths of
