Garfield The Cat Is Not Non-Binary (But Apparently We Thought He Was)
It turns that Garfield, legendary comic strip cat, is a boy after all. “Garfield is male,” creator Jim Davis said to The Washington Post. Davis then added the non sequitur, “He has a girlfriend, Arlene," as if only people who are male have girlfriends. But putting that bit of heterosexism aside, how did we get to the point where this was a statement that needed making? It turns out that Jim Davis, presumably without meaning to, started that himself.

In just over a decade, Boom Studios has established itself as one of the most important publishers in comics, and key to its success is the all-ages Kaboom imprint, headed up by editor Shannon Watters. A former Tokyopop copy editor and assistant editor on titles like Irredeemable and Elric, Watters has been a part of Boom from the ground up, and even with licenses for some of the biggest properties on the planet, Watters and the creators under her have consistently traced their own path, to the delight and benefit of critics and readers.

Garfemon is a project by cartoonist Shawn Bowers where he's mashing up Garfield's signature orange-and-black design with the original 151 Pokémon. It is easily one of the most upsetting things we have ever seen on this job, so obviously we had to share it with you, dear reader.

Hire This Woman is a recurring feature on ComicsAlliance that shines a spotlight on female comics creators, whether they're relative newcomers or experienced pros who are ready to break out. In an overwhelmingly male business, we want to draw your attention to these creators --- and to raise their profile with editors and industry gatekeepers. Artist Genevieve FT has worked in animation and video games, but also has a love of comics. She's drawn Garfield comics as well as covers for Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors, and Archie Comics.

Boom Studios has a reputation in the comics industry for publishing an increasingly diverse group of books and creators. This commitment to diversity in genre and people is reflected in an all-new initiative the publisher announced today in Previews with a letter from founder Ross Richie. While 2015 is the 10th anniversary of Boom, the publisher wants to talk about what's next rather than what's come before. They call this discussion of the future Push Comics Forward and they don't want it to be only about Boom. Push Comics Forward is Boom's way of focusing on the ongoing conversation about diversity and the future of the industry. To learn more about this initiative and what to expect from Boom for the next ten years and beyond, we spoke with Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon.

It's not often that you get a piece of comics news that's completely unsurprising and completely welcome at the same time, but that's exactly what we got this week when Boom! Studios announced that their Kaboom imprint will be publishing a comic book version of Natasha Allegri's Bee and Puppycat. The official announcement about Bee and Puppycat joining its fellow Frederator shows, Adventure Time a

If you've read ComicsAlliance comments for any amount of time, you'll know that if nothing else, we are bitter, jaded (hipster???) dinosaurs. As a result, it may seem rare that we get excited about something like a variant cover or a convention exclusive, unless it's something pretty, pretty awesome. Fortunately for our tiny, blackened hearts, that exact thing happened today when Boom! Studios rev
