Welcome to Give ‘Em Elle, a weekly column that hopes to bridge the gap between old school comics fandom and the progressive edge of comics culture. This week I'm thinking about queer subtext. Okay, full disclosure, I am literally always thinking about queer subtext. When I was in grad school, I taught a film class about queer subtext and how to find it. So that's where I'm coming from. But I'm especially thinking about it in comics.
This week marks the release of Glen Weldon's latest book, The Caped Crusade. Following up on 2013's Superman: The Unauthorized Biography, The Caped Crusade finds Weldon looking at Batman through the lens of nerd culture, exploring how fandom has reacted to --- and been influenced by --- the different ways that the Dark Knight has changed over the years.
ComicsAlliance spoke to Weldon about diving into the fandom of the '60s, the clash between the Batman of the comics and the Batman that existed in wider culture, and the elements that completed his character.
