20 Great Black Comic Book Characters
It's no secret that white male leads have dominated comic books since --- well forever. In the '60s, Marvel and DC finally started to put a change to that with the addition of super-powered people of color, which led to some of today's biggest names in comics. But it still wasn't enough. Eventually the lack of diversity led to the onset of Milestone Media in the '90s, where Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle crafted several intriguing characters. With an increasingly active black nerd, or blerd, community, new black characters are being created every day --- primarily through independent publishers, though Marvel has also kickstarted a focus on one of its most notable black characters --- but more on that later. To celebrate Black History Month, ComicsAlliance is running down our list of 20 Great Black Comic Book Characters. Our list considers old staples as well as some new favorites, including a certain katana wielding badass, space explorers and of course, plenty of superheroes.

'Flash' Borrows a 'Black Lantern' For Robbie Amell's Return
We’d already known The Flash would use its Earth-2 connections to return Robbie Amell to the role of Ronnie Raymond, former Firestorm host, but it seems the character’s parallel universe name may carry some major DC weight. Meet “Deathstorm,” as The Flash namedrops a Green Lantern baddie for Robbie Amell’s return!

We’re a little over four months from the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will launch a whole new world of films into our lives: the DC Cinematic Universe. Spinning out of the events of 2013’s Man of Steel, it will pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against Ben Affleck’s Batman, and put both characters on the path toward a massive two-part film about DC’s heavy-hitting super-team, the Justice League of America, which will also feature the exploits of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and more.

Sideshow Goes Green With Its Latest Premium Format Figure
Looks like Sideshow has finally seen the green light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps the sculptors were just green with envy that so many other DC heroes had their chance to shine already, and it was time to give the brightest star in the Justice League his chance to shine. There will be no more dark days in the future for this character now that Sideshow's finally going to give the emerald in DCU's crown the attention he deserves. It wasn't easy being green, but now that there's a premium format figure for the galaxy's greatest space cop on the way, the hard times are coming to an end. Is that enough cheeseball Green Lantern preamble for you? Good. Now we can just get to the part where I talk about how great it is that there's a sweet new Green Lantern statue on the way from Sideshow, while also bemoaning the fact that it's yet again another Hal Jordan collectible.

As far as Green Lanterns go, Hal Jordan may get all the headlines, but everyone knows Kyle Rayner is the greatest hero to ever don the the uniform. You could make a case for Guy Gardner if the person you were trying to convince had never heard of Green Lantern before, and John Stewart is in a league all his own, so nobody is even close to his tier in the conversation. You got all those other weird dudes like Mogo and Stel, and of course there's that one guy that will always be championing Kilowog over in the corner. Good for him. Anyway, since Hal Jordan is the name that draws the most attention for reasons, he always seems to get preferential action figure treatment, too. Most of the rest of the Lanterns have at least been honored by DC Collectibles over the years, but when it comes to third party manufacturers, it's almost always Hal who gets the nod. Such is the case with Herocross' latest Hybrid Metal Figuration. He'll join the existing multiple Batmen, Superman, Robin and the Flash in the line, bringing the Justice League roster that much closer to completion.
