Comic artist Edvin Biukovic died fifteen years ago this month at just 30 years old. His death was obviously a terrible loss to those who knew and loved him. It was also a terrible loss to the comic industry; Biukovic never received the level of lasting acclaim or recognition that his talent deserved, and produced relatively few works. Yet he was one of the finest comic artists of his generation.
Biukovic published several works in his native Croatia that have sadly never been translated. His finished English-language works include a couple of Star Wars stories published at Dark Horse, and the first of Peter Milligan's Human Target stories for Vertigo. One work stands as his masterpiece; Devils And Deaths, written by his long-time friend and collaborator Darko Macan, and published by Dark Horse, is a science fiction story about a country torn apart by ancient grudges and tribal conflicts, and of the desperate people trying to eke out a purpose in the midst of war.
Matt Wagner's next journey into the violent and beautiful world of his signature creation, Grendel, will be in the form of a crossover issue with a character almost as close to the cartoonist's heart: The Shadow. The three-issue prestige format series (48 pages each) will be published by Dynamite Entertainment and finds Wagner's iconic anti-hero Hunter Rose -- a creature of the late 20th century -- traveling back in a time to the 1930s, where he will encounter the Shadow in what if nothing else will be an uncommonly well drawn and designed comic book.
The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, will hold its annual exposition from October 12 to October 13. This years exposition will again be held at the at The North Bethesda
This afternoon at Comic-Con, Matt Wagner and longtime editor Diana Schutz led a lively discussion centering on the past, present and future of Grendel in which they revealed so much information that I'm not going to belabor you with any further introduction.
