Announced at E3 2016, Injustice 2 is the follow-up to NetherRealm Studios' popular DC Comics fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. Taking up some time after the conclusion of the first game's story, Injustice 2 brings with it a new threat to the populace of Earth, along with new heroes and villains to battle it out for dominance in the face of whatever monster lurks in the darkness of space. Previously only announced with a vague 2017 release timetable, we now know Injustice 2 will be making May 2017 that much more super alongside events like Free Comic Book Day and the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.

This week at Gamescom, NetherRealm Studios unleashed its latest two roster additions to Injustice 2 upon the world. Fresh off their starring turns in Suicide Squad, both Harley Quinn and Deadshot will be front and center when the DC fighting game sequel hits shelves next year. Harley Quinn's return was about as easy to predict as the inclusion of the Trinity, but Deadshot is a bit of a surprise addition that gives Injustice 2 a bit more ranged variety. Both are shown off in the latest trailer, which also gives us a glimpse at a number of armor variations you can earn for the Suicide Squad members.

Announced last month, Injustice 2 will continue NetherRealm's alternate DC Universe take on a world where Superman rules the planet with a benevolent Kryptonian hand. This week at San Diego Comic-Con, NetherRealm announced two new members for the roster: Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle. The roster is still expanding, as Injustice 2 isn't due out until sometime deep into 2017, but right now there's a solid core in place of new and returning characters. At a roundtable session this weekend, we were able to catch up with DC Universe veteran Phil Lamarr, who plays the returning Aquaman, and newcomer to the multiverse, Laura Bailey, who brings Supergirl to Earth for the first time in the Injustice timeline. We weren't able to pry many secrets from the duo, but we did get a glimpse inside the work the actors put into the sequel.

You know what's cool? Grabbing Atrocitus, flying him into space, taking a lap around the sun, and then blasting him back down to Earth with heat vision. No matter how many times we were able to pull off Supergirl's super move in Injustice 2, that trip round Sol just never got old. It was just about the most satisfying special attack you could ask for when adding Supergirl to the roster. It certainly beats her cousin's, which merely takes place in the upper atmosphere, and has him punching his opponent a few times before flinging that foe back down to the ground. So yeah, Supergirl is better than Superman.

Getting a sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us was always highly likely after the first game had such tremendous success. Following in the footsteps of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, NetherRealm's Injustice took the familiar faces of DC Comics and put its unique twist on them, pitting the world against Superman's tyranny. If you finished the story mode, you'd know heroes like Batman finally locked Superman up in a Red Sun prison... but there are those that wish to see the Kryptonian regime restored. That's where Injustice 2 picks up. Of course, there's a new threat looming over Earth as well, but NetherRealm is mum on just who or what it may be. Hey, you can't spill all the beans in a reveal trailer. What you can reveal though is a strong cinematic that reveals not just which characters will be returning, but what NetherRealm has in store for the game's mechanics to make it stand out from the previous entry.
