If you're already familiar with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, that classic piece of Arthurian Lore, then you're no doubt aware that it's a pretty weird story. It's built around strange trickery and tests of loyalty, suspiciously non-fatal beheadings, and, of course, Christmas. But despite the best efforts of the 14th century, it does not involve time travelers, the Eternal Warrior, or glowing sunglasses. Until now! Next month, Fred Van Lente and Cary Nord's Immortal Brothers: The Tale of the Green Knight, in which Faith is down with a bit of con crud and Archer (of & Armstrong fame) tells her a story of chivalry and knighthood that bears a suspicious resemblance to Valiant's three immortal brothers.

Good news for those of you who enjoy your Arthurian legends mixed up with superheroes: Last week, Valiant announced Immortal Brothers: The Tale of the Green Knight, a new 48-page one-shot from Fred Van Lente and Cary Nord that retells the story of Sir Gawain through the lens of the Valiant Universe's three immortal brothers. Inspired by Barry Windsor-Smith's take on the Three Musketeers from 1993, this one finds Aram, Ivar, and Gilad --- alias Armstrong, the Timewalker, and the Eternal Warrior -- involved with a life-and-death wager against the mysterious Green Knight. To find out more, ComicsAlliance spoke to Van Lente about his inspiration for the story, the ease of mapping the brothers to their Arthurian counterparts, and why a story so weird makes for a great superhero comic.

Valiant Comics‘ shared superhero universe is smaller and less familiar than those of its major rivals, but even a small shared universe can offer a lot to learn about. To help those readers looking to take the plunge into the Valiant Universe, we’ve assembled our own team of delinquents to break things down. Steve Morris knows Valiant inside out; J.A. Micheline is new to the universe. Micheline has the questions, and Morris has the answers. Last month, JAM and Steve raced round the world with the buddy-comedy duo of Archer & Armstrong, but this month the two have decided to keep it in the family as they discuss JAM’s latest assignment: Armstrong’s brothers Gilad, AKA The Eternal Warrior, and Ivar, Timewalker.

A few years ago, around the time that Matt Smith was gearing up to replace David Tennant, I briefly made an attempt to get into Doctor Who. Sadly, it didn't really take -- as much as I liked reading stuff about the show, and as much fun as I had with bits and pieces of it, the show never really hooked me the way that it did my friends, and I ended up being quite possibly the only person in the world who liked Doctor Who Magazine more than Doctor Who. Last week, though, it all clicked into place with the release of Fred Van Lente, Clayton Henry, and Brian Reber's Ivar, Timewalker #1 and its story of time-spanning action and underlying mystery. Basically, this was the version of Doctor Who that I actually wanted.

In January 2015, Valiant plans to expand its line with a wave of new series, including an ongoing Ivar, Timewalker title from the acclaimed team behind the new Archer & Armstrong book, Fred Van Lente and Clayton Henry. Ivar was created by Barry Windsor-Smith as a supporting cast member in the 1990s Archer & Armstrong series, the third part of Valiant's "immortal trio" along with Armstrong and The Eternal Warrior. Ivar made his debut in the new Valiant Universe in the opening pages of Van Lente & Henry's Archer & Armstrong #1, as a schemer whose plans gave all three brothers the power of immortality -- and destroyed an entire world in the process. As the new series begins, Ivar has made his way to the present day, hoping to atone for his wrongs and keep the past, present, and future from colliding. We spoke to Fred Van Lente to learn more about his plans for the series.
