If any Marvel movie director had a take on long-awaited crossovers, it’d be Guardians of the Galaxy boss James Gunn. The Vol. 2 director is only now preparing to share his interstellar heroes with The Avengers, but even Gunn doubts we’ll see the other Earth-based TV heroes taking part in the great Infinity War.

We’ve known for quite some time that Thanos won’t be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which will instead focus on Star-Lord’s dad (Kurt Russell) and a new set of problems — including Ayesha and some very unhappy Ravagers. But it looks like the big angry purple guy isn’t the only one who (literally) won’t be in the picture, as director James Gunn has confirmed that the sequel doesn’t feature any of those pesky Infinity Stones, either.

In recent years, studios have begun putting their special Comic-Con teasers and sizzle reels online in an effort to combat piracy — although the footage is meant to be a Comic-Con exclusive, they’d rather let the fans at home see it the way it was intended instead of watching a blurry, shaky version that someone recorded on a cell phone. Even still, there are some pieces of footage that don’t make their way online, like the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teaser. Back in June, James Gunn teased that he and the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' gang would bring “something pretty cool” to Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel. We didn’t get a new trailer, but we did get a logo and some details about a new clip.

San Diego Comic-Con saved the biggest news for last. Marvel’s panel is the last big film panel in Hall H this year, and we’re bound to get some huge news on everything from ‘Doctor Strange’ to ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.’

People wait in line for hours, even days, to get inside Hall H, San Diego Comic-Con’s Mecca of giant panels and exclusive video presentations. Last year, I walked the entire line the night before a big day of events; it stretched almost a mile and a half along the San Diego waterfront.

A couple of weeks back, directors James Gunn and Scott Derrickson hinted that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Doctor Strange will be making an appearance during Marvel’s panel at Comic-Con next month. In a new video from the set of the former, Gunn confirms those plans while officially wrapping production with Chris Pratt on the sequel.

It may be hard to believe, but Comic-Con is very, very close — next month, in fact. And that means that we’ll be hearing a lot more about this year’s panels and special presentations in the weeks to come. After sitting out last year’s con, Marvel is returning to San Diego in July and it looks like they’re bringing at least a couple of their upcoming superhero releases to Hall H.

James Gunn has said — repeatedly — that he has no plans to include any of the Avengers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is happily operating in its own strange little corner of the MCU. But what about a former Avenger? Maybe one that wasn’t present for Civil War? If Gunn’s latest photo from the set of the Guardians sequel is to be believed, then we might be in for a very cool cameo.
