New 'Lumberjanes' Artist Carey Pietsch on Earning Her Badges
As the latest guest artist to head out to camp with the Lumberjanes, Carey Pietsch is well qualified. Not only does she know her way around a campfire, but her previous comic work includes a series of self-published mini-comics that combine exactly the sense of grandly fantastical and intimately personal that has made Lumberjanes one of the most important hit comics of the past couple of years. Pietsch joins writers Shannon Watters and Kat Leyh for the latest Lumberjanes arc, featuring an encounter with a possible werewolf, starting with issue #21, in stores this week. ComicsAlliance chatted to Pietsch to find out how she landed the gig, and what sort of experience she has in the wilderness!

Last week's release of the Lumberjanes one-shot special Beyond Bay Leaf introduced two new creators to the world of Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types, and while audiences should know writer Faith Erin Hicks from her career of excellent webcomics and teen-friendly tales like Friends With Boys and Adventures of a Superhero Girl, artist Rosemary Valero-O'Connell is just starting to make her name, and the Lumberjanes one-shot is one of her first published works. ComicsAlliance chatted to Valero-O'Connell about her story of stargazing and ghost ponies, and her relationship to the Lumberjanes characters, and she offered us an exclusive look at her art process, from pencils to finished pages.

'Saga,' 'Sex Criminals' And 'Dick Tracy' Win At The 2015 Harvey Awards
Last weekend at Baltimore Comic-Con, the 27th annual Harvey Awards were held, and in one of the least surprising developments in the history of the Harveys, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga took home a few more awards to add to a shelf that I'm sure is already collapsing under the weight of its many honors. Named for MAD Magazine editor and cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman (who, interestingly enough, did not win the award he was nominated for this year), the Harveys are voted on by industry professionals, and this year's winners represent a pretty interesting crop of current comics, including CA favorites like Lumberjanes, Hellboy In Hell, and even Dick Tracy. Check out a full roster of winners and nominees below!

As a wise crab once observed, the seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake. That's the sort of sensible advise that might help resolve the rivalry between two mermaids in next week's Lumberjanes #18, from the creative team of Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh, and Carolyn Nowak. Of course, before we get to the advice, we might want to account for the presence of mermaids and other strange mer-creatures in the lake. And before we get to that, there's the promise of ducks, and a donut inflatable, and an awesome rock 'n' roll vest to encounter. Check out a five-page preview kicking off the next great Lumberjanes adventure!

I was in the happy position of sitting at the same table as the Boom Studios/Lumberjanes team when they scooped up two Eisner Awards at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, for best new series and best publication for teens. The team seemed surprised and overwhelemed, but to everyone else in that hall it must have felt like an inevitable moment of truly deserved recognition for a landmark series that showcased exciting new talents and brought a flood of new readers into comics. Now Boom is recognizing Lumberjanes' accomplishment in its own way with a beautiful hardcover collection of the first eight issues; Lumberjanes To The Max.
