The Complete Jack Kirby Character Sketchbook (Summer 2013)

Untitled-1

For the past few years, I've been taking a sketchbook to conventions across the country and getting pieces of art with a single theme: Characters created or co-created by the King of Comics, Jack Kirby. After 52 sketches, you'd think I'd be running out of characters, but with only a couple repeats, it's still going strong. Today, in honor of Kirby's 96th birthday, I'm putting all the sketches in one place to show some of the best artists working in comics celebrating Kirby's lasting legacy as a creator!

This might be the strongest "oh crap I need to own that" reaction I've had to anything in 2013 so far. Criterion, the company that produces high-end Blu-ray/DVD collections of classic films, has recruited more than 25 artists to produce illustrations for an upcoming Zatoichi box set, collecting the 25 Zatoichi films produced between 1962 and 1973. The list of creators involved is somewhat staggering, with names like Bill Sienkiewicz, Ron Wimberly, Yuko Shimizu, Jim Rugg, Paul Pope, Samuel Hiti and more.

Best Art Ever (This Week) – 08.16.13

Untitled-1

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great images on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, and some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it’s awesome.

adventure-time-2013-spooktacular

While traditional holidays didn't necessarily carry over into the Land of Ooo after the nuclear apocalypse a.k.a. "Mushroom War," Adventure Time's supernatural-filled setting is certainly ripe for Halloween-y scary stories. With that in mind, Boom! Studios is rolling out the Adventure Time 2013 Spoooktacular special this October featuring tales of the tricky and treat-y variety by Jen Bennett, Bryce Carlson, Ming Doyle, Jones Wiedle, Jay Hosler, Kevin Church, Frazer Irving, and Jen Vaughn. Illustrating the special's covers will be Becky Dreistadt, Doyle and Wiedle. Full story details are still forthcoming, but you can give the upcoming Spoooktacular's covers a closer look after the cut.

afterparty

What are you doing New Year's Eve? It may seem a long way off, but as announced at Friday's Cup O' Joe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kieron Gillen is already making plans.

The last issue of Young Avengers in 2013 and the first in 2014 tell a two-part story of a single night at a party - a chance to blow off steam after the trials and tribulations ahead. What makes the story really exciting is its guest artists, including Becky Cloonan, Joe Quinones, Ming Doyle, Christian Ward and Emma Vieceli. ComicsAlliance spoke to Kieron Gillen to find out more about the story, and what readers have to look forward to in the meantime.

Best Art Ever (This Week) – Superman 75th Anniversary Edition

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great images on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we've created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it's new, some of it's old, some of it's created by working professionals, some of it's created by future stars, some of it's created by talented fans, and some of it's endearingly silly. All of it's awesome. In honor of this year's 75th anniversary of the first appearance of Superman and this weekend's release of Man of Steel, we present for the second time a compilation of some of the coolest portraits of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's brilliant creation that we've highlighted in this feature over the last few years. We know it's cheating but we didn't count on going away for a month and then coming back in the middle of a big media event. All-new next week evermore.

Boston’s Comic Community Comes Together For ‘Not-The-Boston-Comic-Con’

comicazi-lede

After last week's tragic events in the city of Boston led to the postponement of Boston Comic Con, the show's organizers collaborated with New England's local comic shops to put together a variety of events throughout the weekend, to the delight of the convention's would-be attendees. Local comic retailers held their own free mini-conventions, wherein each shop set up an artist alley featuring a handful of Boston Comic Con's gu
