Undoubtedly the Marvel Comics stories that brought the Guardians of the Galaxy back to the forefront of fans' minds -- and shaped the versions of the characters that appear in the movie that opens next week -- were Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest.
Those series were also a bit of a revival for another character, Nova. And in a recent interview with ScreenCrush, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said some early drafts of the Guardians of the Galaxy script included the Richard Rider version of Nova.
Marvel is relaunching New Warriors next month under the guidance of writer Christopher Yost and artist Marcus To, and at least three of readers' old favorites, Speedball, Nova (though presumably not the same Nova) and Justice, will be part of the team. New additions include Sun Girl, Scarlet Spider, and Hummingbird.
Last time Beta Ray Bill appeared in the pages of Marvel comics with a character named Nova, he was fighting the Cancerverse alongside the previous Nova, Richard Rider, in the pages of 2010's The Thanos Imperative. Now there's a new Nova, and Bill's coming back to find out what the new kid, Sam Alexander, is all about.
The alien hero shows up in Nova #13 (which also has a big #1 on the cover, presumably because of the creative team change), writer Gerry Duggan's first issue on the book with artist Paco Medina.
New photos from the London set of Guardians of the Galaxy hit the Web today, giving fans their first real glimpse at several of the alien races set to appear in the movie (there's a definite Star Trek feel to the makeup), and the uniforms the Nova Corps will be wearing.
Check out a smattering of photos (the first of which reportedly featured Glenn Close in full makeup as Nova Prime, but is in fact not her) from a scene in which aliens run across London's Millennium Bridge after the jump.
Marvel confirmed Monday afternoon that current Deadpool co-writer Gerry Duggan will fly solo on Nova, the publisher's space opera comic starring Sam Alexander, a fifteen-year-old member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps. Artist Paco Medina will remain with the title, which welcomes Duggan in the form of a backup for issue #10 -- which will be renumbered as Nova #100, marking the one-hundredth issue of Nova since the original series' launched in 1976.

Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum have had a pretty busy week announcing all kinds of upcoming Minimates, but especially those of the Marvel variety. Following the image reveal for the 50th series of Marvel Minimates, DST and AA have unveiled their 51st batch of characters, nearly all of which are first-timers in the line...
Gazillion's Marvel Heroes video game had a pretty big presence at last weekend's New York Comic Con and our own Chris Sims clocked some time behind the controls, which he'll be reporting on in detail later this week...
The launch of two new books saw the return of Marvel's cosmic titles at yesterday's Marvel Cup O' Joe panel at New York Comic-Con -- but we were told not to think of them as "cosmic" anymore. The panel led by Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada also featured many of Marvel's bigwigs, including editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, publisher Dan Buckley and Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb, most of whom took the opportunity to deafen the crowd by shouting "NOW" into their microphones...
At the SXSW Interactive conference in Austin, Texas today, Marvel Comics unveiled its new "ReEvolution" initiative, with a new digital device app called Marvel Augmented Reality, and new digital-only imprint, Infinite Comics, which will offer digital comics that tie in with existing print titles...
