Marvel Announces Hickman And Ribic On New 'Secret Wars'
Jonathan Hickman has been building up to something big for the Marvel Universe for the entirety of his run on Avengers and New Avengers. His 'incursions' -- alternate realities colliding and wiping each other out -- were the driving force behind Infinity and the splinter that divided the Avengers in Original Sin; they now form the backdrop to his books as they skip to a new status quo under the 'Time Runs Out' banner. There was always a plan. Now we know the culmination of that plan. As announced at a Times Square event for New York Comic-Con on Thursday evening, Hickman's Avengers runs will end in May 2015, and he'll be joined by artist Esad Ribic on a year-long epic event book called... Secret Wars. No, for real. Secret Wars. Maybe they don't know that the name's been used before? No-one tell them. They've been working on this for ages; they'll be so disappointed.

Tips And Advice For A Safer New York Comic-Con
This year, New York Comic-Con is taking harassment on their convention floor more seriously than ever before. Their brand-new anti-harassment policy is comprehensive and offers a great deal of protection for attendees. Still, we here at ComicsAlliance wanted to offer some tips for ensuring you and others around you have the safest, most fun convention possible.

IDW Artist's Editions For Barks And Rosa 'Uncle Scrooge' Comics
IDW seems dead set on taking as much of my money as it possibly can. Not only has the publisher produced high-end 'Artist's Editions' of some of my favorite comics, including Jack Kirby's Fourth World, Frank Miller's Daredevil and Walt Simonson's Thor, but as part of this year's New York Comic-Con, it's announced upcoming Artifact and Artist's Editions respectively for Carl Barks' and Don Rosa's Uncle Scrooge stories. The announcement comes as part of a resurgence of interest in the creators' work on the World's Richest Duck, which also includes new hardcover collections of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge from Fantagraphics. The IDW collections, however, will print the original art at its original size.

Zander Cannon Goes To Giant Monster Jail In 'Kaijumax'
Zander Cannon's graphic novel Heck was hands-down one of the best books of 2013. It mixed an intricately detailed depiction of hell with a deep emotional resonance and an expressive, but also appealingly simply cartooning style. In some ways, it was so good that it made it hard to imagine how Cannon could follow it. But then Oni Press announced Cannon's new, ongoing series at New York Comic-Con Thursday. It's called Kaijumax, and it's about a maximum-security prison for giant monsters. Let me repeat that so it sinks in. It's about a maximum-security prison for giant monsters. When we all expected Cannon to zig, he zagged.

Derek Charm Talks 'Powerpuff Girls Super Smash-Up'
With New York Comic-Con coming up this weekend, many publishers are saving up their big announcements for the Javits Center. IDW Publishing, however, has decided to get the jump on everyone by releasing their first big announcement a few days early, and it's one that we're definitely looking forward to. Following on the success of Super Secret Crisis War, the Cartoon Network crossover event, IDW has announced Powerpuff Girls Super Smash-Up, a new ongoing series that will team Townsville's favorite heroines up with Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo and more -- and the series will be written and drawn by Derek Charm. To find out more about the series, scheduled to kick off this January, we spoke to Charm about more about the premise of the series, which characters we can look forward to, and whether the Talking Dog will finally get his starring role.

You would think that by October, the end of Convention Season as we know it, publishers like IDW would be running out of exclusive covers and new titles to debut at cons. But you would be wrong. The dogged determination of the people who make comics should never be underestimated, and when they set up at Booth #1844 next weekend at New York Comic Con, IDW is going to have plenty to offer.

New York Comic Con is right around the corner, and if you're planning on heading to Manhattan's Javits Center next weekend, the good people at Boom! Studios want to give you as many chances to part with your money at Booth 1344 as they possibly can. To that end, they're offering up a slate of pretty amazing looking variant covers, including a beautifully painted wrap-around cover for the Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake hardcover and an NYC-specific image where Jake Lawrence's Teen Dog takes a ride on a cosmic subway. My personal favorite, though, is the first issue of Sleepy Hollow, the tie-in to the amazingly bonkers Fox television show, which features Abbie and Ichabod charging through the forest with a hot pink lantern, as drawn by Lumberjanes co-creator Noelle Stevenson. It is basically amazing.

ReedPOP Goes In-Depth On Plans For New York Super Week
Last week, ReedPOP (the company behind New York Comic Con) announced that it would present an event called "New York Super Week" in October -- a ten-day festival of pop media events at venues all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. And while the initial press release was full of hype and excitement, and contained a few intriguing tastes of planned events (Neil DeGrasse Tyson! Podcasts! Concerts!), the announcement came with very little information. There was no language about pricing, ticketing, or other logistics. The just-launched Super Week website contains links to forms so retailers and restaurants/bars can sign up to offer special promotions in association with the festival, as well as a submission form for organizations and individuals to propose events -- but again, concrete details were light on the ground. As might be expected, this has led to a variety of reactions from the comic and entertainment community. Many welcomed the idea of an expanded event, unbound by the confines of a convention center, while other conversations on websites and social media expressed skepticism about the motivation for crowd-sourcing venues and events, and commented that it seemed like an attempt for ReedPOP to monetize satellite events not actually organized by the company. ComicsAlliance reached out to Matthew Wasowski, the Festival Director of Super Week, to ask for clarification on some of these issues, and get answers to a few of the questions that have arisen.
