Pokemon Superbowl Spot

If you've been reading ComicsAlliance for long enough, then it absolutely will not surprise you to learn that nothing makes me more emotional than Pokemon. They're just so... they just want to be friends and to grow stronger through the firebreathing dog equivalent of martial arts! They just want you to be your best!

And that, my friends, is what Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are highlighting with their upcoming Super Bowl commercial. It's part of a year-long celebration of the franchise's 20th Anniversary --- Pokémon Red and Green made their debut on February 27, 1996 --- but it was released online today for all of us to enjoy. Give it a watch, but prepare to start sobbing.

Frightful Five: The Scariest Ghost-Type Pokemon

Gengar by Junji Ito
Gengar by Junji Ito

The world of Pokémon is a strange one indeed, and along with sentient ice cream cones and three-foot bees with drills for hands, one of the strangest things about it is the very existence of the Ghost type. That they even exist at all means that there are straight up ten year-old children running around bottling up the spirits of the restless dead and using them to fight talking flowers and whatever the heck Slowpoke is, and that's weird even without the part where the afterlife has been 100% proven by scientists, and that our souls have been proven to be not all that different from, say, a rat that shoots lightning out of its face, or a snake that's just basically a snake.

So with Halloween on the horizon, we turn to the Pokédex, courtesy of the indispensable Bulbapedia, to look at Pokémon's most terrifying Ghost types!

You Can Build Your Own Pikachu Next Year, And By You, I Mean Me

Pikachu, as seen in the Pokémon anime

I've never really had the inclination to go into a Build-A-Bear Workshop. To be honest, the whole thing seemed like a hassle, and when I thought back to when I was a kid, I kind of felt like the process of actually making a stuffed animal was probably the least fun part of having a stuffed animal, and paying extra to do it myself felt like it was more than a little bit overpriced. But then they announced that shoppers will have the opportunity to build their own Pikachu, and I realized there was no amount of money I would not pay to make that happen.

The Original Concept Art For ‘Pokemon’ Is The Most Important Historical Document Of Our Time

Original Pokémon concept art

There are few things in this world that I am more interested in than the history of Pokémon. They are, after all, the single most important thing in the world, helping us with every aspect our lives --- as long as the most important aspects of our lives involve running around fighting organized crime at the age of ten and making our pets fight each other so that they can double in size, turn into lamps or, in some cases, sprout literal guns from their shoulders.

But I'm getting off track here. The point is that the history of Pokémon is fascinating stuff, which is why I was so excited to find's collection of original art and design documents for the franchise.

Take Dance Lessons From Pikachu Before A Pokemon Outbreak Hits Yokohama This Summer

If you're the kind of person who keeps up on a very specific kind of news, then you might remember that last year, the city of Yokohama, Japan was host to one of the greatest events in human history. For nine days, Yokohama played host to over a thousand Pikachus, marching through the streets and, one assumes, tempting Team Rocket into what would have been the biggest heist of their careers.

Sadly, we do not live in a perfect world where this is happening literally all the time, but on August 8, the electric Pokemon will return to Yokohama for another nine-day celebration... and this time, they will be dancing. The event's official name is "Dancing? An Outbreak Of Pikachus," which is equal parts whimsical and terrifying, and thanks to an instructional video, you can learn to dance along!
