The Best, Worst and Weirdest Alternate Universe Superhero Deaths In Comics

death00

For the past few months, Marvel's advertising department has been doing their level best to get readers psyched up about the impending "Death of Spider-Man" (buy digital) in various Ultimate comics, and if you ask me, it's working: The death of an alternate universe version of a character? Who wouldn't be excited about that?

But really, killing off characters left and right is exactly what Alternate Universes are for. Creators might not be able to ever really off any heroes in the main-line stories of serialized fiction, and even if they do, it doesn't tend to stick -- just ask Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- but in alternate universes, you can go for a full-on slaughter. That's why today, in honor of the Ultimate Death of Ultimate Spider-Man, I've sifted through a stack of What Ifs, Elseworlds and time-travel tales to bring you The Best, Worst and Weirdest Alternate Universe Deaths!

8-Bit Comics: Your Favorite Super-Heroes Reimagined For the NES

8bitghostriderwm

When I was talking about the upcoming "Thor" game last week, I got around the lack of screenshots by whipping up my idealized 8-bit game for the God of Thunder. And that got me thinking: What if they had converted my other favorite comics into 8-bit NES games -- or, in the case of Batman and the X-Men, what if the games they were in were actually good? So today, I'm playing with power as I imagine what a few great comics might look like if they had their roots in the 8-Bit Games of the NES era!

Ghost Rider x Excitebike
Batman: Knightfall x Super Mario

Cerebus x Legend of Zelda

Lex Luthor's Punch-Out!! (Featuring Superman)

Thor x Mega Man

Watchmen x Super Mario 3

Archie & Jughead's Burger Time

Uncanny X-Men x Final Fantasy

Hellboy x Castlevania

The Punisher x River City Ransom
