At this year's Fan Expo in Toronto I was lucky enough to see some of the pages for Ray Fawkes' new Image series Intersect up-close; beautiful painted pages depicting a world of darkness and dread. Fawkes is a self-taught artist who balances a mainstream career writing books like Constantine and the forthcoming Batman horror series Gotham By Midnight with more personal and often boldly experimental work, like his Oni Press books One Soul and The People Inside, which use the comics page to explore lives in parallel. Intersect is an ongoing horror story set in a grotesquely distorted city -- but to know more than that, you'll need to read the book. ComicsAlliance spoke with writer and artist Ray Fawkes to learn more about the process behind Intersect and how he balances the different sides of his career.

It's safe to say that former Vertigo editor Mark Doyle has been blowing our minds since he took over as editor of DC's Batman line, launching and relaunching titles like Batgirl, Grayson, and Gotham Academy that feel exciting, entertaining, and refreshingly different from DC's "house style." Now add another title to the pull-list; the horror series Gotham By Midnight, by Ray Fawkes and Ben Templesmith. Gotham By Midnight tells the story of the Gotham City Police Department's horror beat, the "midnight shift" that deals with monsters, ghosts, and a creepier class of creep. The book is headlined by a familiar name from the Bat-universe, Detective Jim Corrigan -- who happens to be host to the vengeful divine force The Spectre. It sounds like Gotham By Midnight has the potential to be a very left-of-center Gotham Central.

Among the colorful cosplay, massive booths, interactive displays and walls of merchandise at Comic-Con International in San Diego — colloquially known as SDCC — remains the most important component of the show: comic book creators. In the final few hours before San Diego Comic-Con opened its doors to the public for Preview Night on Wednesday, Image Comics Expo took place in an upstairs ballroom at the nearby San Diego Bayfront Hilton, where the publisher welcomed a group of press, creators, and fans to watch as the company announced, discussed and otherwise promote a great variety of upcoming Image titles.
