Give ‘Em Elle: Koi Boi and Trans Representation in ‘The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’

kb_banner

Koi Boi, a young Marvel superhero who’s been around for about a year, is transgender. Specifically, he’s trans-masculine. Most likely he’s a trans man, but since he hasn’t specified, I don’t want to push him into a binary that he may not identify with.

If you don’t know who Koi Boi is, you’ve been missing out on Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and that’s a shame because it’s a great book. Koi Boi is an Asian American college student named Ken Shiga, but that’s about all we know about his life. Except that he’s transgender, and apparently hasn’t had top surgery, because he wears a binder. But to know that, you have to really be paying attention, because nobody’s said it in the comic yet.

If You Choose To Look At The Cover For ‘Romeo And/or Juliet,’ Continue Reading

Romeo And/Or Juliet cover by Noelle Stevenson

Back when Ryan North launched his Kickstarter to publish To Be Or Not To Be, a chooseable-path version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, he made the promise that if it was successful enough, he'd work on a similarly interactive version of Romeo & Juliet. Now, it's happening, and while we've known for a while that it's set to hit shelves this summer, today we have a brand new cover by Noelle Stevenson to go along with it.

And considering that it involves Romeo and Juliet battling a giant robot with buzzsaw hands and laser eyes, I think it's fair to say that once again, North has drastically improved on his source material. Plus, I think there's a distinct possibility that Romeo might become a Batman.

Cast Party: Who Should Star in a ‘Dinosaur Comics’ Movie?

ElleCollins_CastParty

Welcome to Cast Party, the feature that imagines a world with even more live action comics adaptations than we currently have, and comes up with arguably the best casting suggestions you’re ever going to find for the movies and shows we wish could exist. This week we're looking at a webcomic for the first time, and in fact it's one of the most respected and long running comics on the web, Ryan North's Dinosaur Comics.

Now you my be wondering how it would be possible to make an entertaining movie out of a web comic in which each installment has the exact same artwork with only the dialogue changed. Honestly, I wonder that too. That's why I would hire Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to write and direct this movie. As the team behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and The Lego Movie, they have a proven track record of making very funny films out of material that ought to be disastrous. So let's get them talking to Mr. North, and see what they can figure out.
