Interview: Sam Humphries On ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ And The Weird History Of Marvel’s Next Movie Star

Legendary Star-Lord, Marvel Comics

Of all the Marvel characters who have made it to the big screen over the past few years, none have seemed less likely than Peter Quill. An obscure sci-fi character who debuted in the '70s and made a handful of appearances in his first three decades of existence, he rose to fame during the Annihilation crossover as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a ragtag band of spacefaring heroes who battled evil across the stars.

Now, with a Guardians of the Galaxy movie set to debut this summer, Peter Quill is getting his first ever ongoing series as The Legendary Star-Lord, thanks to Sam Humphries (Avengers A.I., Sacrifice), artist Paco Medina (Nova, Ultimate Comics X-Men) and colorist David Curiel. To find out more, I spoke to Humphries about the history of Star-Lord, how his obscurity helped to propel him to fame, and why his hair has to stay gloriously uncovered.

Marvel went to C2E2 armed with a plethora of publishing announcements for the Chicago crowd, focusing largely on special projects like miniseries and some pretty cool-sounding Original Sin tie-ins, but with a couple auspicious new series as well. In an inspired bit of comic book casting, Our Love Is Real and Avengers A.I. writer Sam Humphries will write the The Legendary Star-Lord, a new series drawn by Paco Medina starring the Guardians of the Galaxy leader. In similarly agreeable news, fan favorite X-Men leader Storm will star in a new ongoing series, this one courtesy of Greg Pak and Victor Ibanez.

New ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Movie Photos Peek Behind The Scenes

Guardians of the Galaxy Behind The Scenes
Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios has released four new images from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, two of which are official stills and two of which go behind the scenes.

The most interesting of the bunch is a shot of Chris Pratt's Star-Lord running along the terrain of an alien planet, with the wall behind him just a flat wall of blue. It's not all that different from an old Star Trek set. It just goes to show how much post-production work goes into making movie look as polished as the final screenshots presented here look.

Check out all four images after the jump!

New ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Clip Serves Up A Bit More Star-Lord [Video]

Guardians of the Galaxy Star-Lord Clip

If you've seen the trailer for the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, you're likely already familiar with the prominently featured scene in which Chris Pratt's Star-Lord tiptoes up to an ancient-looking artifact with designs on stealing it in a manner reminiscent of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Now, Marvel Studios has released a slightly longer look at that scene in what you might call a clip or what kind of seems like a slightly different trailer cut. Whatever you'd call it, the video awaits your eyes.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movie probably seems like a pretty weird concept to a lot of folks unfamiliar with the comics source material, so Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is here to offer a primer.

Speaking with Empire magazine, Feige said the Guardians are "an unlikely band" brought together by "pure circumstance." He went on to describe each character. You can catch all his descriptions after the jump.

Star-Lord’s Suit, Drax’s Daggers And Nova Corps Troopers: Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Movie Props [SDCC 2013]

Marvel

As neat as it was to see more Asgardian artifacts from Thor: The Dark World and Cap's new red-less costume and shield from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the real hotness for many was the plethora of Guardians of the Galaxy props displayed at the Marvel booth during Comic-Con. The film's concept art promo image featuring Dave Bautista as Drax (the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord mostly focuses on character likeness, but the props -- which include SL's mask and guns, Drax's daggers and... somebody's Sony Walkman? -- definitely help complete the looks of a few characters. And did we mention they were being guarded by full-on Nova Corps troopers? See what you make of the GotG goodness after the jump.

gotg-lede

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 hits stores today, a new series by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven that hopes to boost the profile of Marvel's space-faring super-team ahead of next summer's movie release, so that when your non-comics friends ask you, "Who are these Guardians of the Galaxy?", you don't answer, "the who-dians of the what-now?"

But... who are the Guardians of the Galaxy? They're actually talking owls from a series of fantasy novels about... no, sorry, my editor is telling me that is not correct. If you're feeling a little confused, don't panic! ComicsAlliance is here to tell you everything you need to know about the Gladiators of the Gridiron! And then some.
