GLAAD Media Awards Announce Shortlist For Outstanding Comic
The GLAAD Media Awards have always provided an interesting marker for the progress of queer representation in mainstream comics. While in the past many comics received nominations and accolades for achieving minimal levels of inclusion, the industry is now bustling with competition for the award, which celebrates LGBTQ characters and themes in comics. This year's shortlist is the biggest one yet, and the field is wide open for anyone to take home the coveted award.

James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas' The Woods, published by Boom Studios, is a sort of sci-fi high school version of Lord of the Flies or Lost. A group of students and teachers disappear from Earth and end up in a mysterious forest world light years away. The 36-issue series has been planned as three volumes of 12 issues each, which means issue #13 is the perfect point for new readers to jump on board and give it a try.

And already the cast of the series have had everything imaginable thrown at them --- from shadowy pus-monsters to angry faculty staff. From James Tynion, Michael Dialynas and Josan Gonzales, this is a book that very clearly has a huge sense of scale hidden away behind the dark forest that surrounds the cast. Boom has kindly shared an exclusive preview of the next issue, so we can get a sense of just what terrible problems the kids are facing next...

Best Comic Book Covers Ever (This Month): June 2014
A great comic book cover has a lot of work to do. It’s both an advertisement and a work of art; both a statement and an invitation. Sometimes they convey character, sometimes mood, sometimes moment. Sometimes they pastiche the classics or pay tribute to the past; sometimes they strive to show us something entirely new. Always they show us a glimpse of somewhere else through a canvas no bigger than a window pane. In Best Comic Book Covers Ever (This Month), we look back over some of the most eye-catching, original and exceptional covers of the month that was. Bloodbaths, glowing hands, and sinister animal silhouettes; these are a few of comics' favorite things, judging by the comic book covers from June 2014. Read on for great covers from Riley Rossmo, Christian Ward, Russell Dauterman, Jerome Opeña, and more.
