Recently, Hugh Jackman expressed a desire to continue playing Wolverine until he dies — or until Fox decides his time is up. It looks like that time is fast approaching, as Jackman himself has announced that The Wolverine 2 will be his final outing as the iconic X-Men character, although whether or not he’ll appear in X-Men: Apocalypse remains uncertain.

Jackman took to Instagram, where he posted a photo of his hand accessorized with his famous Wolverine claws, announcing that the upcoming Wolverine sequel will be his last:

It was recently rumored that Jackman’s Wolverine would be one of three mutants making a cameo in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which could still make The Wolverine sequel his final appearance as the character, given that the latter arrives almost a year after Apocalypse.

Jackman began his Wolverine journey with Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie in 2000, and has since reprised the role seven more times, including a cameo in X-Men: First Class. His first solo movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t fare well commercially or critically, but the actor course-corrected with James Mangold’s The Wolverine. Magold is returning to direct the upcoming sequel with Jackman reprising his role for what will now be the final time.

When that movie hits theaters, it will mark the eighth time Jackman has played the character on the big screen — or the ninth, if he does make an appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse after all.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016. The Wolverine 2 arrives on March 3, 2017.
