If the previous few years were all about the Inhumans at Marvel, then 2016 is the year of Squadron Supreme. Next month sees the release of the third title under that umbrella in the form of Nighthawk by David Walker, Ramon Villalobos and Tamra Bonvillain. The new series sees a cross-dimensional Nighthawk faced with a serial killer that reminds him of his methods perhaps a bit too much, and we've got a preview of the first issue.

The Nighthawk in the new series is not the 616 iteration with the giant yellow wings, but is instead the Supreme Power incarnation of the character, stranded on the main Marvel Earth following Secret Wars. In a departure from other versions of the character, Supreme Power's Nighthawk is a black man and his stories were often set in drug-riddled neighborhoods in Chicago, often told without the tact or deftness those stories require.

The current take seems to be a much more nuanced approach to the character and the issues that trouble the city of Chicago. David Walker has developed a reputation for telling thoughtful and complex stories in a similar vein through his work on Shaft and Cyborg, and Villalobos style lends itself to superbly to mixing the larger-than-life with the down-to-earth.

Straight from the pages of SQUADRON SUPREME comes one of the most brutal super heroes of the Marvel Universe. Nighthawk is Chicago's dark protector, dispensing swift, decisive justice to those that truly deserve it. When the city's shadiest power brokers turn up murdered in gristly ways, the apparent work of an inventive serial killer, Nighthawk must ask himself, Does this predator deserve to be caught? Who is the killer? What is he after? What does he want from Nighthawk? To answer these questions, Nighthawk must first look in the mirror.
