Last season’s Walking Dead finale treated viewers to the surprising reveal that not only was Morgan hot on the trail of Rick Grimes, but also that he’d picked up some sweet moves with a bo-staff. Last night’s premiere saw Morgan alluding to his trainer, but the real world has a far more surprising revelation: Lennie James was trained by a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

While presumably we’ll learn more of Morgan’s training in an upcoming hour of The Walking Dead Season 6, actor Lennie James shared the true source of his skills at the Madison Square Garden fan premiere, working under martial artist Steven Ho. Ho notably acted as the fight double for Donatello in the latter two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies, while James spoke to his own turtle power:

I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I took to it much faster than I thought I would. And, that made shooting the series a lot better. It meant that we could push along what we’d show in an episode at a higher level. And I feel like the stick has become important to Morgan’s identity.

For his part, Ho has also contributed stuntwork to the Spider-Man and Pirates of the Caribbean films, as well as Conan. No, not that Conan. This Conan.

While we wait for more of Morgan’s meticulous skill in the coming episodes, AMC also released the first official clip from next week’s “JSS,” and confirmed that the midseason premiere would take place on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
