Well Hugh Jackman did say there was some stuff about Wolverine 3 coming “in the next week or so.” He is a mutant of his word! The Movie Formerly Referred to as Wolverine 3 has an official title, unveiled by Jackman himself on his Twitter account:

Um, Logan, my friend. My good friend. My pointy compadre. I am worried you are going to accidentally chop that kid’s hand into thirds. Put those claws away, dude!

There’s been lots of speculation that this Wolverine, the last, supposedly, for Jackman before his retirement from superheroing and only eating chicken and green vegetables 365 days a year, would be based on the Old Man Logan Marvel series featuring an older version of the hirsute mutant in a post-apocalyptic world with no other heroes. The title Logan certainly nods in that direction, but it also could nod, like The Wolverine did, at another stripped-down character study about the man behind the claws. (Maybe the test marketing department decided Old Man Logan didn’t play well with the target audience of teenagers and twentysomethings.) I’m not sure average moviegoers know that Logan means Wolverine, but I guess when you stick a hand with claws next to it, they get the drift.

Director James Mangold joined in on the fun but tweeting the second page of the Logan screenplay:

This particular portion caught my eye:

In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when s--- falls on them. They will get just as hurt or killed when s--- falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.

The next graph notes that this Logan is “older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain – hence booze as a painkiller.” So it may not be the Old Man Logan, but it’s definitely exploring similar territory. Wolverine 3  Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
