‘The Wolverine’ Sequel Could Reunite Hugh Jackman With Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth

With Deadpool, Fox successfully (like, really successfully — record-breaking-successfully) rebooted a character who had previously been horrifically adapted in another, lesser film, and they did so without recasting the role. Miracles do exist. Now that Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth has been given a second cinematic life, could the same be done with another actor from X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Liev Schreiber, perhaps?

Like Reynolds, Schreiber wasn’t the problem in the early, famously flawed X-Men spinoff. The actor was actually well-suited for the part of Sabretooth, it’s just the film around him that stunk. It’s been rumored that Schreiber could reprise his role as Wolverine’s enemy in James Mangold’s sequel to The Wolverine, and MTV had a chance to ask the actor about the possibility on the red carpet at the Oscars (where Schreiber’s Spotlight claimed Best Picture):

We talked about it. I don’t know. He’s mentioned it to me. The Old Man Logan story — that’s appealing. That’s something that I can do. Old, being the operative word.

It’s far from anything official, but it does prove that there’s definitely some interest in having Schreiber’s Sabretooth return for The Wolverine 2. The film begins shooting this year, so it shouldn’t be long before we learn more about the plot beyond the vague “Old Man Logan” description — since Fox doesn’t own the rights to many of the Marvel characters in that story, it’s unclear exactly what aspects Mangold is using beyond the concept of an older, retired Logan.

Michael Green is scripting the sequel, which also features Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, reuniting the actor with Jackman for his final Wolverine outing. The Wolverine 2 hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
