Two considerable bits of Marvel multimedia news have surfaced just in time to cloud every comic book fan's thoughts during rush hour. Watch yourself on the commute home because not only is Disney XD going to air a new "Ultimate Spider-Man" animated series beginning in the Fall of 2011, Joss Whedon is reportedly in final negotiations to direct "The Avengers," which is scheduled for a May 2012 release.

The focus of the Ultimate Spider-Man series will reportedly be a high-school Peter Parker balancing his relationships both in and out of costume and Marvel's official description suggests that he won't be alone in his struggle, either, having other heroes (presumably in their "Ultimate" forms) to team up with.

"Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth," said Eric S. Rollman, President of Marvel Animation.

As for Whedon directing "The Avengers," fans probably shouldn't get too excited (or drunk, depending on your opinion of the creator) until the ink on his rumored contract is dry. Deadline seems pretty serious about the news coming to pass, however, which means full-blown fandom controversy has another day or so before reaching critical mass...maybe.

Be careful driving home with a spinning head, hear?
