‘Mortal Kombat’ Crime Short Could Go Feature Length

Remember the "Street Fighter Legacy" short film we linked to some weeks ago? If you were impressed by that, wait until you get a load of "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth."

The eight minute movie takes place in Deacon City, a crime-ravaged wasteland where the Violent Crimes Unit headed up by Captain Jackson "Jacks" Briggs (Michael Jai White) and his partner Sonya Blade (Jeri Ryan) are trying to clean up the streets. In their desperation, they turn to one of their own prisoners with the idea of inserting him into a secret underground tournament headed up by Deacon City's numero uno bad guy: Shang Tsung. The man only agrees once he learns that his arch-rival Sub-Zero is one of the tournament's dangerous competitors. The man's name? Scorpion.

According to Ryan herself, "Rebirth" is not a video game trailer - it's a short film made by director Kevin Tancharoen to sell Warner Bros. on his vision of a reimagined "Mortal Kombat" movie. The biggest obstacle standing in Tancharoen's way is that the video game franchise's film rights are in legal limbo thanks to a lawsuit filed in 2006 by the original movie's development partner. But if rights issues are resolved and the suits at Warner Bros. like what they see, Tancharoen's "Mortal Kombat" might actually have a fighting chance at a full-length feature film.
