Amassing a host of serious injuries, delays and poor reviews, the $65+ million Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical seemed especially doomed when a New York Times writeup deemed even its "new" version "so grievously broken in every respect that it is beyond repair" earlier this month. There's new hope for the much maligned musical, however. According to Deadline, sometime comics scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Marvel Knights 4, Tower of Shadows) has been hired to re-write Julie Taymor and Glen Berger's original book. From Deadline:

Considering that one of the criticisms of the show is that it lacks an insider's voice about the webslinger, Aguirre-Sacasa is a strong choice. While his credits include most recently writing a new book to the Charles Strouse/Lee Adams musical It's A Plane, It's SUPERMAN! that was a hit at the Dallas Theatre Center, he has also written Spider-Man comics for Marvel. He also writes on the HBO series Big Love and Aguirre-Sacasa is repped by WME.

It's unknown just how strenuous Aguirre-Sacasa's re-write will be. If criticism is a factor, it's easy to imagine a pretty thorough overhaul of Turn Off the Dark's second act. Regardless of the depth of the re-write, it seems probable that the musical might not hit its currently-planned March 15 release date.
