Marvel’s announcement of an Inhumans movie was a welcome surprise when they rolled out their prospective slate of superhero films holding us prisoner for the next century. Then, the Inhumans movie was taken off the roster completely after being pushed back to make room for Disney’s Indiana Jones reboot. Then, Marvel president Kevin Feige said that, yes, it was still happening, just not in Phase 3. We hadn’t heard a ton of news about the movie since then, but Feige is now still saying that he thinks an Inhumans movie would be “super cool.”

Talking with /Film about the future of Marvel’s plans, Feige seemed very confident that Inhumans was happening, eventually, in one form or another. It’s just going to be a while.

I think Inhumans will happen for sure. I don’t know when. I think it’s happening on television. And I think as we get into Phase 4 as I’ve always said, it could happen as a movie. I think it would be super cool.

The Inhumans plotline has basically come and gone on ABC’s Agents of SHIELD, but that doesn’t mean anything as far as the movies are concerned. The show did have a very clever way of tying together with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but since then we haven’t seen a lot of synergy between the showrunners and the folks behind the movies. Civil War ignored the Inhumans completely, and the screenwriters weren’t even aware that that story had begun on the show. Which is a bit of a shame, since the show had a much better way of explaining superpowers popping up worldwide than the movie, which had to constantly tap-dance around saying that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were mutants. If they had to change their origin story, tying them in with the Inhumans plot might’ve been more elegant.

In any case, Marvel seems pretty occupied with fitting almost every superhero we’ve met so far into the Infinity War films, so it’s probably a good thing that the Inhumans have been put on the back burner for now, until they have the space to give their story the time it deserves.
