Spider-Gwen Earns Style Points on Landing a New Kotobukiya Statue
Following the success for Kotobukiya's Avengers and X-Men ArtFX+ lines, the company turned its eye towards Spider-Man for the next collection of Marvel statues. Unlike those other waves though, the Spider-Man collection is a mix of heroes and villains in the family, provided they're directly Spider-related. You won't see the Green Goblin make an appearance (though a Sinister Six set would be intriguing), but you will find Venom and Carnage, both of whom spun out of Spider-Man's own symbiote connection.
More importantly, you'll also find alternate universe Spider-heroes like Miles Morales and today's reveal, Spider-Gwen. Actually known as Spider-Woman in her own universe, Gwen gets bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter, taking up the mantle when things go south and the world needs a hero. Her debut in Spider-Verse was a highlight, and now collectors are seeing the benefit of her awesomeness.
This is the second Spider-Gwen statue from Kotobukiya, though this one is more "authentic" I suppose. The Bishoujo line the company has reinterprets familiar characters in "beautiful girl" style, but the Spider-Gwen created for that series didn't actually stray too far from the basic mold. Which was good, because sometimes Koto strays a bit out there and the designs aren't quite as true to the original characters as they should be. But I digress.
This Gwen is about as straightforward as can possibly be expected, though that's not a bad thing. Her pose is rock solid, and though I'm still a bit bummed she, Peter and Miles are all getting the Spider-squat stance, that those three share that commonality says a lot about how Koto and Marvel are viewing the importance of these characters. They're all on the frontline together, each representing the true Spider-Man (or Woman) of their worlds.
Even though she's squatting, you still get a good idea of Gwen's design, which is one of my favorite modern hero costumes. The colors pop and contrast well with the rest of the figures, and even absent the other half-dozen statues, this is a solid piece that would look great on just about any shelf.
The Marvel Now Spider-Gwen ArtFX+ statue is available for pre-order now for $69.99, and is expected to arrive in April 2017.
