Gift Guide: Manga and Anime For Western Comics Fans
From its days as unfamiliar black-and-white single comics discovered as if by chance in Western comics shops, manga has become the biggest-selling sector of the comics industry, and an influence on dozens of creators in the North American industry. Much like Western comics, manga is for everyone, so if you know someone who loves comics but has never got into manga, we've put together a gift guide with great ideas for books and movies that you can buy them this holiday season.

Viz Media Launches Free Daily Digital Manga Section
Since 2012, Viz Media has fought the omnipresence of poorly translated bootleg manga by offering weekly manga chapters published simultaneously with Japan in the digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Now Viz has gone one step further in that cause by unveiling a new section of Weekly Shonen Jump's website with free official translations of popular and new series posted daily.

Viz Media has announced that it will continuing its efforts to republish all of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga in lavish, oversized, full-color editions with the first volume of the legendary Freeza Arc, available in print and digital on May 3. The classic storyline, which initially ran from 1990-1991, sees Gohan, Krillin and Bulma head to the planet Namek to find Dragon Balls to revive their friends. They learn that the all-powerful alien warlord Freeza is after them --- as is the terrifying Vegeta --- and the hunt is on.

Akira Toriyama might be the most famous comics creator that I have the least familiarity with, but I'm trying to remedy that. Slowly but surely, I'm making my way through a few of the pieces of his back catalog that aren't necessarily about Goku charging up to Super-Saiyan, and with Halloween on the horizon, I thought it was finally time to sit down with Cowa, the 1997 comedy manga about a little kid vampire on a mission to save his village from the ravages of the monster flu. I picked it up during Viz's last big digital manga sale and I've been saving it for the one month where I want to read about Draculas slightly more than I do for the rest of the year. Now that I've read it, I can highly, and probably unsurprisingly, recommend it. It's funny, it's adventurous, and it's not at all the story that it looks like at first glance.

On The Cheap: Best Bets For The Viz Manga 'Shonen Jump' Sale
This week, Viz and Comixology launched what is probably the most overwhelming digital comic sales since... well, since last month, I guess, when someone decided that it was a good idea to put literally every Dark Horse comic on sale for half off. This time, its's a sale on action manga from Shonen Jump, featuring almost a thousand volumes, including popular series like Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto and Eichiro Oda's One Piece, but it's going fast. The sale ends tomorrow.

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, as well as the special qualities of comic book storytelling, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great pinups, fan art and other illustrations on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, and some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it is awesome.
