The end of the year is a time of reflection in many ways, and that often means thinking about and assessing what the very best releases in any particular medium were. As we prepare to cross the threshold into 2017, we've been collecting some of the best covers of the year by publisher for your perusal, and today we're looking at fifty of the best comic book covers released from Image Comics in 2016.

We're very quickly heading into a golden age of comic book television adaptations, not only with superhero shows such as Iron Fist (teased at a panel on Thursday) and Defenders (likewise), but with hit adaptations of indie properties like The Walking Dead and Preacher. Production companies are quickly learning that indie comics are a rich vein of longform storytelling just waiting to be tapped, and there's now a scramble to find the next hit. Following on from the announcement that Rick Remender and Wes Craig's Deadly Class was heading to TV under Joe and Anthony Russo, another fan-favorite Image Comics series is heading to TV; Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott's Black Magick.

This week saw the release of the first issue of Black Magick, the new series from Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott, and from the very first page it was easy to see that those two creators were doing something different. The visual style of Scott's watercolors bring incredible depth and expression to a story that blends crime and the occult in a way that's pure enjoyment to read. To find out more about the series, I spoke to Rucka about his approach to the rituals shown in the comic, the main character's crucial flaws, and the unexpected roots of his love for supernatural stories.
