Stela is a new smartphone app that offers original, exclusive comics optimized for the phone-reading experience. Chapters release every week, and you can read them all for a flat subscription fee of $5 a month. Reading the comics in Stela is smooth and intuitive. Each chapter is read via a downward scroll, and it totally works. Stela moves beyond Comixology's Guided View technology to offer comics that were born to be read on phones, and the result is extremely effective and, at its best, beautiful. However, there are some things about the app that I don't love.
All I want is to look at a simple list or menu of the titles available, but Stela doesn't want to give me that, just a sliding visual menu along the bottom of the screen. Also when I was reading a comic, I wanted to be reminded of the title, and there seems to be no way to bring that up without exiting the reading experience. But let's take a look at opening wave of comics available so far to help give you a sense of what Stela has to offer.

The Walking Dead has proven to be possibly the biggest crossover hit from indie comics to the mainstream, and is one of those special television shows that feels like an event that you have to talk to someone about as soon as it’s over. Now in its sixth season, with the comic just passing the 150 issue mark, The Walking Dead as a franchise is a runaway success that shows no signs of stopping, even producing its own TV spin-off in Fear the Walking Dead.
If you’re a fan of the shows, the comic, or both, we’ve got some recommendations for other comics you might want to pick up next.

A couple of weeks ago cartoonist Tess Fowler tweeted that she had been sexually harassed at a comic convention by a well-known comics writer some years earlier. At that time, she did not name the other party. ComicsAlliance's Matt D. Wilson was among those to write about Fowler's widely reported commentary as part of a vital discussion about the culture of misogyny and sexual harassment that pervades the comic book industry, and what might be done to punish offenders and make the industry safer and more inclusive for women.
Earlier this week, after receiving emails from three other women describing similar troubling experiences with the same male comics writer, Fowler chose to identify him by name. The writer is Brian Wood.
Wood has now released a statement admitting to having “made a pass” at Fowler in the past. He denies accusations of harassment and abuse.

Marvel's X-Men comics recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with Battle of the Atom, a ten-part crossover between its four main X-Men titles that brought together mutant teams from the past, present and possible future -- and combined the talents of writers Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron and Brian Wood and artists Frank Cho, Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo and David Lopez.
The X-Men have had their share of epic tales over the past fifty years, including the Dark Phoenix Saga, Inferno, Age of Apocalypse and Avengers vs X-Men. So how did the Battle of the Atom stack up against the franchise's history, and where does it leave the characters as they head into the next fifty years? ComicsAlliance splits the atom. Spoilers follow.

The latest relaunches of Conan The Barbarian and Red Sonja -- published by Dark Horse and Dynamite, respectively --have revitalized both franchises. Writer Brian Wood's work on Conan has been well-received, and the announcement of Gail Simone writing a new Red Sonja ongoing brought a level of attention and excitement to the character that had not been seen in some time. And though the two series are currently released by separate publishers, the characters remain forever associated with each other. With that in mind, Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse have announced they will collaborate to release a crossover between Conan and Red Sonja, to be published by both companies and written by Wood and Simone.
