If you smell what The Rock’s been cookin’ (i.e. if you follow him) on social media, then you know that the charismatic and insanely busy actor recently had a very good meeting over at DC about the long-awaited Shazam movie. (No, not like that make-believe ’90s movie.) Apparently, that meeting went so well that the studio has reportedly split the film into two projects — or, more likely, they realized the error in thinking they could just cast Dwayne Johnson as a super-villain in someone else’s movie.

For gentiles far and wide, yesterday was a day of rest and relaxation; Henry Cavill spent it making headlines. Today brings a twofer of Super-news in the post-Christmas lull:

Perhaps understandably so, the first trailer for Disney’s Moana was a bit more preoccupied with Maui, the jovial demigod character voiced by Dwayne Johnson. What can we say? The Rock is an instant selling point, even when we’re only hearing his voice. But the international trailer puts the spotlight on the titular hero, seen here in the opening scene as a cute little toddler who discovers that she has a rather magical connection to the ocean.

Dwayne Johnson has been rumored for Shane Black’s long-developing adaptation of Doc Savage for some time now. The director of The Nice Guys has been vocal about Johnson being his top choice, and a recent Instagram post only fueled speculation as Johnson revealed he was planning on filming something with Black in 2017 — that something is indeed Doc Savage, confirmed by Johnson in yet another Instagram post earlier today.

Another week, another exciting Instagram update from our crazy-busy, impossibly charming and totally ripped pal Dwayne Johnson. Despite his increasingly crowded schedule, it looks like Johnson may have finally found some time to devote to Shane Black’s long-developing Doc Savage movie — thus confirming our suspicions that The Rock may actually be an advanced A.I. that requires no sleep.

It’s a good read — not only does Matt Patches get at some nifty insights about violence on film and working with Ryan Gosling, but he extracts two tantalizing tidbits from Black that will only enflame fan anticipation for his upcoming projects.

The biggest, nerdiest party in the world kicks off on Wednesday in San Diego and, yes, ScreenCrush and ComicsAlliance will be on hand to cover it all. With Marvel, Sony, and Paramount, all sitting out this year’s big geek bash, the clear #1 panel to anticipate is Warner Bros.’ Saturday morning showcase of their upcoming slate. The presentation will include clips from the new live-action Pan starring Hugh Jackman, and the movie version of the ’60s spy series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. A few months back, Dwayne Johnson hinted at an earlier release date for Warner Bros.’ Shazam, in which the actor is set to play the villain, Black Adam. The film has been scheduled for a 2019 release on WB’s big, busy superhero slate, but Johnson is once again promising that we’ll get to see Shazam much sooner than that.
