The writer of Boom! Studios' Bravest Warriors and Adventure Time: Bitter Sweets, IDW's Edward Scissorhands and Archaia's Fraggle Rock, Kate Leth got her start with the frequently autobiographical, always entertaining webcomic Kate Or Die. Now published bi-weekly here at ComicsAlliance, Kate uses the strip to address topics germane to the comic book and broader nerd cultures. And Halloween. See, in reviewing the last couple months of strips, we noticed Kate has a preoccupation with dressing up and all things macabre, so much so that we were able to compile this digital collection of spooky and costumed-themed comics for your Halloween enjoyment.

On sale next week from the kaboom! imprint of Boom! Studios, Adventure Time: Bitter Sweets is the fourth in a series of original graphic novels starring the characters from Pendleton Ward's enduringly popular and influential animated series. The first three, printed in black and white, explored scenarios and relationships like Finn and Princess Flame's budding romance; a coming-of-age journey with some of the series' idiosyncratic princesses; and a teen-type angst opus starring Marceline the Vampire Queen. Courtesy of writer Kate Leth and artist Zachary Sterling, Bitter Sweets is a full-color adventure (obvs) focused squarely on Princess Bubblegum and Peppermint Butler, who is her butler (obvs), as they traverse the lands beyond the Candy Kingdom.

Beware the Valkyries: Kate Leth & Women Retailers [Interview]
Behind the scenes in comics, there are a number of shadowy groups pulling the strings of the industry... Okay, that's not entirely true, but there is a group that operates behind the scenes and affects the industry, and that group is the Valkyries. The Valkyries is a group of women who work in comics retail that have banded together. They push books that they particularly love, and work with creators, publishers, and fans to sell more comics -- to women especially. But above all, the group functions as a private support network for women in the comics retail business, and offers its members help when confronting some of the more unpleasant dimensions of the comic book business and geek culture as they relate to women. Started by cartoonist and retailer (and ComicsAlliance contributor!) Kate Leth, the group just hit 300 members total. We chatted with Leth about the group, its purpose, and its plans for the future.

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, as well as the special qualities of comic book storytelling, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great pinups, fan art and other illustrations on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, awnd some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it is awesome.

New York Comic Con is right around the corner, and if you're planning on heading to Manhattan's Javits Center next weekend, the good people at Boom! Studios want to give you as many chances to part with your money at Booth 1344 as they possibly can. To that end, they're offering up a slate of pretty amazing looking variant covers, including a beautifully painted wrap-around cover for the Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake hardcover and an NYC-specific image where Jake Lawrence's Teen Dog takes a ride on a cosmic subway. My personal favorite, though, is the first issue of Sleepy Hollow, the tie-in to the amazingly bonkers Fox television show, which features Abbie and Ichabod charging through the forest with a hot pink lantern, as drawn by Lumberjanes co-creator Noelle Stevenson. It is basically amazing.
