New images emerge almost daily from X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest installment in Fox and Bryan Singer's X-Men film franchise, set in the 1980s. Naturally, this has led to much discussion about how the '80s version of the X-Men look, and whether they could look better. After all, the body armor they seem to wear through much of the film has as little relation to 1980s fashion as it does to X-Men comics. This led famously fashion-oriented cover artist Kevin Wada to tweet a suggestion that everyone should draw the X-Men in film-friendly '80s style outfits.

January 13 sees the release of the second issue of Valiant's The Death Defying Doctor Mirage: Second Lives #2, written by Jen Van Meter with art by Roberto de la Torre. The comic joins Dr. Shan Mirage and her immaterial ghost husband, Hwen, as they and their allies begin a ritual to unlock the secret of a magical scroll. What they find inside is an old-school Hollywood creep, who will no doubt be causing further trouble for the Doctor and her friends. Once again this series sports particularly striking covers, including a great Emi Lenox variant, and one of my favorite Kevin Wada covers ever.

Scarlet Witch has been a growing force in the Marvel Universe of late. Not only has she been a fixture of Uncanny Avengers, but she’s made appearances in the all new Doctor Strange, and The Vision, and of course she made her big screen debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, played by Elizabeth Olsen. And now she's the star of her own ongoing series, from writer James Robinson and a roster of star artists, including issue #1's Vanesa R. Del Rey. The series sees Wanda dig in to the nature of witchcraft in the Marvel Universe, and the book has received particular buzz for its new costume designs; created by the always stylish Kevin Wada. ComicsAlliance spoke to Wada about the redesign, its cues from modern fashion, and how modernization plays into Wanda’s new direction.

More than two decades after their television debut in 1993, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are finally getting a long-overdue style makeover for their upcoming Boom Studios series by writer Kyle Higgins and artist Hendry Prasetya. The series launches with a "Green Ranger: Year One" story arc in issue #1 in March 2016, and the issue will feature eight variant covers, including this Kevin Wada cover featuring the iconic Power Rangers team in their classic MMPR costumes. The series also includes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0, a one-shot prelude scheduled for January 13th, which features an ongoing back-up Bulk and Skull storyline by writer Steve Orlando and artist Corin Howell.

That tiara in her hair; that not-Magneto's-daughter stare, which strips mutant-dom bare, it's Scarlet Witchcraft. As one of the biggest female heroes in the Marvel Universe never to have had her own book before, it's welcome news that Wanda Maximoff is finally getting her time to shine in Scarlet Witch #1. Written by James Robinson, the series promises to dig deep into the question of how witchcraft works (or doesn't) in Wanda's world, and might even explain how her formerly-mutant powers work. When Marvel first announced an ongoing Scarlet Witch series from writer James Robinson, there was a conspicuous lack of an artist attached. On the one hand, it was a bad sign; announcing books without artists tends to devalue the role of artists. On the other hand, it was also a good sign; it spoke to Marvel's efforts to put the right artists on the right books, and perhaps specifically to assign diverse talent to diverse books, like artist Natacha Bustos on Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, and writer Jose Molina on the Santerians revival. To that end, a lot of fans were hoping Wanda Maximoff's first solo series would not come from an all-male creative team. The good news is that those fans have got their wish, with Vanesa R. Del Rey now joining Robinson on the title. The bad news is that it's only for one issue.

Costume has played a big part in writer Genevieve Valentine's approach to Catwoman since she took over the title with issue #35 late last year. Selina Kyle traded in her famous leather catsuit for a tailored black tuxedo to take on the role of Gotham City mob boss, a look designed to evoke power and status. The next issue, out this Wednesday, sees Sellina putting the suit back on to get her gloves dirty once again --- but that doesn't stop her from also wearing a pretty fabulous opera gown.
