Not only did Harley Quinn become an instant fan favorite following her debut on Batman: The Animated Series, but she quickly became an iconic villain, and it wasn’t long before she transitioned to the pages of DC Comics. While most fans agree that Margot Robbie is the perfect choice for the role in Suicide Squad, there’s been much less agreement over her wardrobe — or lack thereof — in David Ayer’s upcoming film. Robbie herself has officially chimed in, offering her thoughts on Harley’s controversial fashion choices.

Though the film doesn’t open in theaters until later this summer, Margot Robbie’s look as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad already seems destined to become a fan favorite. Harley Quinn was always a favorite among cosplayers, but the new look with the rainbow dipped hair, colorful makeup and punk attire has inspired a new wave of fans (whereas the jury is still out on Jared Leto’s look as The Joker). But, it almost wasn’t that way. Robbie says they tried “many variations” of the costume, including the classic court jester costume from Batman: The Animated Series.

Rather than debut a TV spot or a new teaser, Warner Bros. has unleashed its first non-trailer promo for Suicide Squad via Instagram — you know, because that’s where all the cool kids are these days, and Suicide Squad is a movie for cool kids who take 800 selfies and have a Hot Topic frequent shopper card and an ironic appreciation of Jared Leto’s Joker sporting a grill. Does David Ayer’s super villain movie have a type? Not really, but it’s fun to guess.

Set for release in August and based on the comic of the same name, the film centers on a group of supervillains recruited to a secret government task force, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. With its neon lights, quippy jokes, and Queen providing the soundtrack, it’s not the trailer we expected, but it’s definitely an interesting one. That’s why we’re breaking it down to see how successful it was at getting us excited about going to the theater, with CA’s Andrew Wheeler and Chris Sims taking a look at this week’s most divisive piece of advertising.

Our very first look at Suicide Squad came via that now-famous image of Jared Leto as a heavily-tatted, street thug version of the Joker. In keeping with the tattoo angle, Will Smith and Margot Robbie had a little fun on the Suicide Squad set, permanently inking co-star Joel Kinnaman and director David Ayer.
