I don't think I'm going to blow anyone's mind if I say that Jimmy Regent, the main character of Garth Ennis and Russ Braun's Jimmy Bastards, bears a striking resemblance to a well-known numerical super-spy with a tendency for brief but passionate trysts. ComicsAlliance spoke with artist Russ Braun and writer Garth Ennis about what to expect from this latest return to the grungier side of superheroism.

When Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Hitman concluded in 2001, it ended in such a way that it seemed like that would be the last we saw of the titles eclectic cast of characters. That's why it was so surprising when DC revived some of the more out-there Hitman supporting characters last year in a brand new miniseries All-Star Section Eight, which saw Ennis and McCrea return to tell new stories starring the Z-list superheroes of Hitman trying to make it in the big leagues. Now it seems that wasn't the last we'd hear from that corner of the DC Universe either, as DC has announced a new miniseries starring Section Eight's breakout characters by Ennis and his longtime collaborator Russ Braun.

The latest Marvel Secret Wars tie-in is an unlikely story from the likeliest of sources. Garth Ennis, a writer who specializes in off-kilter war stories, is bringing back the 1960s ace pilot hero The Phantom Eagle for the second time, alongside artist Russ Braun, to pit him against a lost land of dinosaurs in Where Monsters Dwell. The Phantom Eagle, aka Karl Kaufman, was created in 1968 by Gary Friedrich and Herb Trimpe in Marvel Super-Heroes #16 as a fantastical version of a Word War I flying ace. Ennis and artist Howard Chaykin offered an alternative spin on the character in the 2008 Marvel MAX mini-series War Is Hell -- a name borrowed from a 1970s Marvel war comic. Where Monsters Dwell is of course the title of another 1970s Marvel comic, as is the previously announced Master Of Kung Fu.

Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson and Russ Braun's The Boys is a series that makes a point out of mining the darker underbelly of the superhero genre, in the process exposing more violent and sexual elements than many are comfortable with... including, it seems, one Middle Eastern country which has apparently banned the series after a reader tried to have copies shipped to her...
