Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Marvel’s reveal of its Marvel NOW line of comics set for release in the wake of Civil War II has taken the form of a steady drip of announcements over the past week and a half, but now news is flooding in, and not all from official sources. Leaked scans of this week's Marvel NOW Previews magazine revealing the publisher's line-up for October and beyond have hit the internet via sites such as Reddit and 4chan. We’ve rounded up all the information we could find to give you a sense of the new landscape of the Marvel Universe this fall.

Nothing like a fresh, piping hot superhero rumor on a long weekend, am I right? Earlier this week, Net-A-Porter (via /Film) took the opportunity to ask Anna Kendrick which superhero she could see herself playing. She admitted that her brother had sent her a Squirrel Girl comic and that Kendrick could see herself playing the character. So if we’re being honest here, a more accurate headline would probably, ‘Anna Kendrick’s Brother Interested in Anna Kendrick Being Interested in a Squirrel Girl Movie’, but my goodness, that’s practically illegible, isn’t it?

The runaway success of Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl shows no signs of letting up, as Marvel announced an original graphic novel, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Marvel Universe, to be released later this year. The announcement came at the Women of Marvel panel at this weekend’s Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), and the current Squirrel Girl team of North and Henderson will also be the creative team on the OGN.

Rumors have circulated over the last few weeks that a Punisher show on Netflix may be on the cards, spinning out of Jon Bernthal's performance in the upcoming second season of Daredevil, while previous rumors suggested that the platform might deliver a Moon Knight show. The first raft of Marvel Netlix shows is less than halfway through launching, and Netflix boss Ted Sarandon has said that further shows are possible, but there are no current plans to do more than a couple of shows a year. 'Phase Two' of Marvel's Netflix plans may be a few years away. But that won't stop us speculating wildly on the shows we'd like to see if the platform does pursue a more aggressive Marvel strategy and move beyond the current line up of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. So in the spirit of wishful thinking, we asked our contributors the question; Which Marvel property would you like to see turned into a Netflix show?

Comics coloring is one of the most unappreciated aspects of the medium, despite enhancing the thematic subtext of a work and just making it look better. In this series I'm going to shine a spotlight on some of the best and most interesting colorists in comics. Rico Renzi is one of the most recognizable colorists in the business. Whether he's working on Marvel comics like Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, She-Hulk, and Howard the Duck, or a Vertigo title like FBP, it's easy to spot a Renzi-colored comic. Renzi always employs a striking color palette. His backgrounds and spot colors take advantage of the fact that comics don't always need to be realistic. While Marvel and DC comics are often colored in a more orthodox style, Renzi employs bold contrasts even there.

It feels like just a few short months ago that Marvel's series Unbeatable Squirrel Girl by writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson launched to near-universal acclaim and widespread popularity. That's because it was just a few months ago. It launched in January. But hey, guess what? As revealed on Sunday at the Women of Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the series is starting anew in October! But don't worry; it'll look much the same as it did. The creative team will still be there, editor Wil Moss will still be steering the ship, and all your favorite characters will stick around! So what's changing, besides Squirrel Girl now being a card-carrying member of the Avengers? We talked to North, Henderson and Moss to get to the bottom of this relaunch, to ask about some of her future enemies, and to find out how similar Squirrel Girl is to the greatest work of our time, Saved by the Bell.
