The Suicide Squad cast assembled at CinemaCon yesterday to introduce their upcoming movie, and as they walked the red carpet prior to their big presentation the cast all reminisced fondly about all the creepy junk that Jared Leto sent them during filming.

Reshoots or no, the latest trailer for Suicide Squad debuted tonight during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, offering a new sneak peek at David Ayer’s gritty super villain team-up. The expression ‘burying the lede’ refers to the practice of hiding key information deep in the body of an article while front-loading less pressing details. Variety did just that in a new report on an upcoming film called Bright (more on that in a moment), but allow us to go right ahead and exhume the lede they buried: the schedule for Bright has been contoured to free up star Will Smith and director David Ayer in time for a 2017 shoot Suicide Squad 2.

Rather than debut a TV spot or a new teaser, Warner Bros. has unleashed its first non-trailer promo for Suicide Squad via Instagram — you know, because that’s where all the cool kids are these days, and Suicide Squad is a movie for cool kids who take 800 selfies and have a Hot Topic frequent shopper card and an ironic appreciation of Jared Leto’s Joker sporting a grill. Does David Ayer’s super villain movie have a type? Not really, but it’s fun to guess.

This week, DC’s cinematic universe took one more step towards becoming a reality with the release of a new trailer for Suicide Squad. Set for release in August and based on the comic of the same name, the film centers on a group of supervillains recruited to a secret government task force, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. With its neon lights, quippy jokes, and Queen providing the soundtrack, it’s not the trailer we expected, but it’s definitely an interesting one. Lucky for you, the trailer has arrived online and the Worst Heroes Ever have assembled, joining forces to take down a threat much worse than all their villainous powers combined.

The CW is airing a big DC special this Tuesday, January 19, hosted by professed comic book nerd / director Kevin Smith and DC’s own Geoff Johns. In anticipation of the Dawn of the Justice League event, David Ayer and his Suicide Squad cast have dropped some colorful new character posters to prepare you for Tuesday night’s sneak peek.

Most DC Comics fans are currently focusing all of their anticipatory energies on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens in theaters next March and will kick off Warner Bros.’ attempt to seriously compete with Marvel and their Cinematic Universe of Avengers. But Warners and DC are already looking ahead to the movies that come after Batman v Superman. First up is Suicide Squad, about a team of super-villains working for the U.S. government in exchange for commuted sentences. Then there’s Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman solo film, following her introduction in Batman v Superman. And at some point down the line, probably in 2018, we should get a solo Batman movie starring Ben Affleck. Just what that movie will look like, and what it will be about, remains unclear.

Our very first look at Suicide Squad came via that now-famous image of Jared Leto as a heavily-tatted, street thug version of the Joker. In keeping with the tattoo angle, Will Smith and Margot Robbie had a little fun on the Suicide Squad set, permanently inking co-star Joel Kinnaman and director David Ayer.

This past weekend at Comic-Con, fans attending the Batman vs. Superman panel were treated to an additional surprise: the entire cast of Suicide Squad appeared on stage (minus Jared Leto) and introduced our first ever look at footage from the upcoming supervillain film. Despite their pleas to not record any of the footage, someone of course did, and it leaked online shortly thereafter in a really crappy quality. Well, director David Ayer and Warner Bros. feel your pain and have decided to do the right thing and just release the whole trailer online.
