Before Marvel and Sony reached their highly-anticipated agreement to combine forces for a Spider-Man reboot, there was a lot of confusion about where the web-slinger was headed. We saw some of that in the e-mails following the Sony hack, accompanied by rumors about potential character returns and various spinoff plans. Now that director Marc Webb and the cast have moved on, they’ve begun to clarify what a third Amazing Spider-Man film would have been like.

While at Comic-Con to promote CBS’ Limitless series (for which he directed the pilot), Webb was asked about what we might have seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. The director told MTV that we would have learned more about that guy in the hat, and we could have seen his version of Venom:

There’s the man in the hat, this obscure character called The Gentleman, who gets the Sinister Six together. That would’ve been fun to play out. Venom, obviously I would’ve been curious to see.

Drew Goddard was writing the Sinister Six spinoff for Sony, though it’s unclear if that’s still going to happen — or if the studio is tinkering with those plans now that they’re rebooting Spidey again with Marvel.

Webb’s explanation about his plans seems totally in keeping with the path he had laid out, but then things get weird in IGN’s interview with Denis Leary, who played Captain Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man. Stacy was killed in the first film, followed by the tragic demise of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy in the sequel. As it turns out, they both might have returned for The Amazing Spider-Man 3:

Possibly in 3, there was this idea at one point that Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that had died. So, there was this discussion that Captain Stacy would come back even bigger in episode 3.

That sounds totally bonkers, but there were rumors circulating last year that Sony wanted to bring Stone back to reprise her role as Gwen in a third film — that makes sense at a studio level, given that the relationship between Andrew Garfield’s Peter and Stone’s Gwen was the only successful element of both films. On a narrative level? Not so much.

But in the Ultimate Comics, Peter did revive Gwen with the use of the Carnage symbiote, so you can see Sony’s line of thinking, particularly if Webb was planning on incorporating Venom.

None of this matters much now, of course, with the reboot underway, but if you were a fan of Webb’s films or just curious about what his third film might have been like, now you know.
